Maybe I should get a poll up about this, but, one of the things I like about DnD is the ability to multiclass. I've chosen "they are balanced" because I seldom play a pure class. Fighter with some sorceror classes thrown in, Bard/Rogue combos, Ranger/Fighter for those extra feats, Barb/Fighter, Cleric/Fighter, come to think of it, I never play a straight fighter....

Another thing : it also depends a lot on your DM. A feral orc barb grapple machine with an int of 4 would be great for some GM's as a deadly combat machine, but in my campaign he wouldn't last for two days in a city, getting either arrested or killed. The bard however, would flourish.

I had to go with the monk. that class really shouldnt even be in a standard non OA D&D game except as a VERY rare plot device. of course thats just my opinion . . .

[ANALOGY]Which of the following tools do you think is the least useful:

1. Hammer
2. Screwdriver
3. Wrench
4. Pliers
5. Saw
6. Chisel

"It has to be the pliers. Why, I've never used the pliers for anything."
"I disagree. Just the other day, I used the pliers to cut a wire."
"The hammer can be used to cut wires, too, if you also have the chisel. The saw will also do in a pinch."
"I think the hammer is the least useful. The handle end of the screwdriver can function as the hammer, too."
"Are you kidding? The hammer is the most useful tool around. It can put in nails, and it can take them out, too."
"As mentioned, the screwdriver can put in nails, and the pliers can take them out. Besides, how many times do you encounter nails, anyway?"
"I notice no-one has mentioned the wrench. Does anyone know how to use it properly?"[/ANALOGY]

Liquid,
I play a Cleric/WarPriest right now....and can kick some serious ass....all the buff spells, plus I have Extra Turning and Sacred Vengence....You get access to the Glory prestige domain, He is a Gold Dwarf Cleric7/WP7....and aside from being as good as a fighter...has healing spells and party support magic...you should see how ugly we get when we can prepare for a fight....

Guys...a Sorcerer is a Mobile Artillery Platform. They are not powerful alone, but with a group, or even moreso, in mass fighting....6 Chain Lightnings, 3 Horrid Wiltings. I'm just praying I get that Ring of Wiz that doubles me to 14 3rd level spells....you can lay out some hefty damage, played right....just my opinion

I'm a bit amazed that a Bard is getting so low of a rank and a Paladin so high. I think that the Bard is the best face card for a group, and also the second best for general rogue-ish-ness. Not necessarily great in any way, but a very versitile character even with fairly average ability scores. Paladins on the other hand, in my experience, have good saves and that's about it. A straight-class paladin gets a mount and the ability to smite evil a few times per day. Maybe my players are a bit fighter-heavy, always having at least one straight class barbarian or fighter, but the paladin is always getting shown that he is inferior where he's focused, and not versitile enough to really make up the difference. The exception being when stats start getting higher, the difference does seem to get smaller, but that's it.

In my experience, the Cleric is one of the most powerful classes in the game, if not THE most. I have seen some pretty massive carnage layed down by mid to high level clerics. I find the Monk to be the weakest, Ive had three players play one under me, and they never last long compared to some of the other classes. This could be as much because the players are trying to play them like front liners (this isnt true in every case) as inherant weakness.

I'm with you on that one B'daddy. One of my friends in our group makes one seriously mean mutha of a cleric, combat skills to rival the tanks and a shed loada spells to buff, cure and hurt.........and that's just at 10th/11th!

I voted monk. I've yet to play a monk, as I look at them and they are just a fast skirmisher in my book. They will be good in situations where getting to a humanoid opponent and neutralising them are important, but a bit humdrum in other circumstances.

I like bards personally. They are very versatile, as has been already said, but the key to their strength is playing across their opponents strengths, rather than to them. My tenth level bard has Grease (Ref Sv), Uncontrollable Laughter(Will Sv) and Glitterdust (Fort Sv) available as combat spells. Any of these can neutralize an opponent effectively, and with one for each Sv type you just need to work out your opponent's weaknesses. He also has Heroism which can boost all his skills, attacks and saves to bring him back in line with the dedicated combatants.

Add in 10 uses of bardic music per day, which can boost the whole party. One of my tactics is to cast Summon Monster 3 at the start of the combat before switching to Inspire Courage - you boost the summoned creatures too.

Dan

How I'd gonna fix the classes? Full spellcasters (wiz/sor/clr/drd) d6 hitpoints, bards/rogues/monks/rangers d8, rest is ok.

Weakest: The monk, without a doubt.

They have decent versatility and a certain style, which appeals to some, but other than that...

Bards are pretty weak in direct combat, but have other areas of expertise.

And saying sorcerers are weak... c'mon!
They might not be as good as clerics or wizards, but weak surely is a bit much there!

And there are actually people voting for cleric, druid or wizard?
Do you play the game in a dead magic zone? :p

Bye
Thanee
