Which Animal Companions Are Tastiest?

I only recently realized how handy it could be to have an Animal Companion around when the adventuring party runs out of food. I figure that the Cosmic Force That Is Nature wouldn't mind too much because the world is all about survival of the fittest, predator-prey, eh?

So as long as you perform the act with due respect to the animal's spirit, there's no good reason not to slaughter one of your critters for lunch every so often. You've probably trained them to answer your commands anyway; it's just one step away from "Jump in this stew pot."

So how many hit dice does a cow have? How about a chicken?

And in the morning, you can burn your holy symbol and ditch the holy avenger, cause you won't be needing either of them in your new career as a fighter.

Rangers, especially the elf or half elf ones are quite good eating and you dont have to feel bad about making the innocent little critter have to give up their life. Invariably, you'll stumble into another party member later on thats either-
An elf
A Ranger
A Half-elf
A Half-elf or Elf Ranger

After all, good PC's will lay down their life and limb for their comrades in battle, or maybe just a limb and promise you'll grow it back later...

Is dying with your horse a more LG action than letting it die instead of yourself?

I don't remember the paladin's code off-hand, but it would seem that playing a paladin is just too restrictive if survival is contrary to his/her code.
