Which class/race combo is the best survivor?

People keep mentioning dwarf. Revenant with dwarf racial feat beats it for not dieing. Pretty much every build you'd pick dwarf in, you could pick the Revenant with dwarf racial feat and get the "don't go unconscious when less than 0 hp" thing.

I'd actually go with Gnome as high survivable, because fewer things seem to get free See Invisible in 4e.

Wardens get the Primal HP/level thing, and the Defender HP/level, in addition to 1 free save at the beginning of their turn. Dwarf is nice for the con bonus and second wind as a minor, human is also nice for that +1 to saves and all defenses. Make sure you don't top load your stats so you have a good spread and can optimise all your NADs.

I'd go with a Human Warden, take one of the several available feats that boost saves, feats like toughness and durability...armor specialization...things like that.

Just about anything can be built for survivability, though it'll have its weaknesses. An Eladrin Feylock with Fey Step and Ethereal Sidestep (teleport 1 at will), in addition to all of his teleoprting powers and Misty Step, can be damned tough to nail down, grab, whatever but if you blind him, he's a dead man.

If you're looking at a level 30 build, there are several epic destinies that make it impossible to die. Of particular note is a revenant beastlord; at level 30, as long as your companion has at least 1 hit point, you can't die, even from going below negative bloodied. With revenant you can still act (and even get bonuses) when you're at negative hit points, meaning you just get tougher once you're damaged enough so long as you keep your beast somewhere safe. It also has good survivabilty leading up to level 30, though a revenant dwarf defender of some sort probably beats it out.

I don't think I'm that interested in playing a revenant. Maybe in a different campaign setting.

Yeah. In addition to using the builder to look at orkus porkus's dwarf build I built an eldarin and gnome fey warlock, a githyanki infernal warlock, and a gnome dark pact. The githyanki infernal and darklock win for damage resistance and damage output. But the way getting auto concealment combines with having a bazillion teleports probably makes feylock win as far as getting control of whether or not (s)he is involved in a fight.

Anyway both the feylock and battlerager dwarf fighter seem like they would do a good job of sticking around. As mentioned, an elven archer is also pretty hard to pin down. On top of having a lot of movement points, that build can have a ton of slide abilities.

hmm... Not really sure what to think.

How does a warden's survivability end up comparing to a fighter after you invest in some armor feats?

A dwarf or half elf warlock (star or infernal) or eladrin or gnome warlock (fey). Can't die if 75%+ of the enemies can't even catch you, can't hold you if they do, and don't even really want to attack you if the first place.

For a little extra cheese on the Feylock at Paragon take Antipathy gloves, Eladrin Boots, and an Eladrin Ring of Passage. Toss in the Feytouched or Long Night Scion paragon path, and Frost Step. Now you can teleport 4 at will while doing automatic minion-killing damage and gaining concealment, and making everywhere that you've been into difficult terrain for a turn, with an extra square of movement required to get to you and melee attack you.

Wardens get 1 more HP/level than a fighter, which is small but adds up. They start with 2 more HP. They have an ability called Font of Life that grants a saving throw at the beginning of your turn. Each build allows you to substitute a different ability score for your armor class as long as you are in light armor.

If you build an Earth Warden, you will want to focus on Wis and Con, which means you will have good fort and will saves (and the class bonus to saves is +1 to those two saves), higher HP's because of the Con, and pretty good AC if you keep pumping Con as you level.

I like them, but I am sure there are other nice survivalist builds out there.

I think you can divide survivalists up into two groups.
1) Just being the toughest guy out there. Doesn't mind direct and honest confrontation, because defenses, HP, surges, healing powers, temp HP sources and the occasional death saves or bring back from death powers make him stand longer than the rest.
2) The evasive type. Constantly in stealth mode, getting concealment, teleporting, damaging with teleporting, teleporting when hit, having a polearm perhaps.

I personally dislike option 2). It's not very heroic in my opinion, and I think most DM's and players get annoyed by a PC in a group that's constantly sneaking around and making everything so complicated with his invisibility and cowardly tactics. End of rant.
