You conciously chose to use THAC0 - you are a disturbed individual!!!!

I admit that the new system is easier and more intuitive in most cases--but it's actually more difficult to use given the fact that I let PCs attempt certain activities by accepting a penalty; however, I don't allow them to raise their required To Hit number above 20 when doing this.

For example, THACO15 attacks AC4...

The required To Hit number is 11, and he can increase this up to a maximum of 20. Roll a d20 and compare to the new number.

Using the new system, +5BAB attacks AC16. He can raise the AC to a maximum of 25. Roll a d20, add 5, and compare to the new AC.

So, the new method requires one more calculation, and the odds of success are not as readily apparent to me as when I simply have a certain number or higher that I need to roll on a d20.

See, when I put it this way, I'm not so disturbed afterall ;)

Er, I was less disturbed before you explained your preference. If AC in 3e is a difficulty level you have to reach, what's so hard about assigning a number for whatever the PC's are trying to do?

Not trying to knock your preference, just curious about the logic.

3E.

You will have to point a gun to my head to get me to use THAC0 and racial class/level limits again.

I've played in a game of 2e since 3e came out.

I feel dirty.... I wish someone had a gun to my head, then I would have had an excuse.

One of my gaming groups at college seems to hate 3e, so I play 1e and 2e with them. Fortunately, there's another group so I can play with a quality system.

LOL :)

Fair enough, let's see if I can explain my logic.

Remember, I'm not trying to convert anyone, just trying to explain my preference within the context of my game ;)

1: Knowing the actual number required on a d20 is crucial for many of my house rules--and this takes just as much math either way...

THACO15 v AC4 -> 11+ (i.e. 15-4)

+5BAB v AC16 -> 11+ (i.e. 16-5)

2: I don't allow the required To Hit number on a d20 to be voluntarily raised above 20, and this is much easier to figure on the fly using THACO.

3: For example, I allow +1 damage per -1 penalty To Hit. If I know the number needed on the d20 is 11+, I can voluntarily choose to raise this anywhere from 0 to 9 points, for a like amount of bonus damage--and the new To Hit number becomes this new value as well. Using BAB, I don't know what the maximum allowable amount of this raise is without doing an additional calculation--which sort of defeats the whole point of using it in the first place.

BTW, THACO becomes even more crucial for another rule I am considerring adding...

Multiplying THACO by the number of attacks a charater wishes to make in a round (although multiplying ACs might work if using BAB, but I haven't tried to figure it out).

For example, a Fighter with THACO7 is fighting several unarmoured foes, and decides to make 3 attacks this round. His effective THACO is now treated as being 21, and he will have to roll 12+ on an attack in order to hit (remember, no armour=AC9 in Basic ;) ).

So see, there IS a method to my madness :)

I only checked 3rd because that's the only one on the list I'm currently DM'ing. I haven't run any of the other games since 2001 or so. But I ran a few basic games back in the 70's and then got the shiny new 1e dm guide and played a lot of 1e. I converted to 2e when it came along and then 3/3.5. I've not actually run a Pathfinder game yet, but I've played in a few. I've run a brief 4e game and I'm planning another just to give the system a chance. In the past I've always abandoned the previous edition for the new, but this time I've not made up my mind. I'm curious to see what Essentials brings to the party. I've enjoyed each of the editions in their turn, warts and all.
