.... from one thread. Go back and look if you are masochistic. I was just pointing out what was interesting to me, that time moves on as do gamers... and some still cling fervently to what they know and love. I'd bet that a number of those who said they were sticking with THAC0 are still doing so even now... or they are dead and buried.

One really big difference if you follow these polls and their trends. When this Poll came out, over 90% of the posters were playing 3e. When the October Poll was done, 4e was getting over 40% but less than 50% of the posters. Thats quite a drop in loyalty.

That would be a drop in loyalty if you were talking about the same population of voters. But you aren't. EN World has changed in 8 years - we've grown, and many of the folks from that time are now long gone, and have been replaced, and their replacements have been replaced.

Again, with the, "EN World polls are not scientific".

A small sample, but demonstrative nonetheless.
I'd say that the sample size itself is demonstrative of the difference....

*IF* I thought the difference was meaningful.

The old ENWorld posts represent the old ENWorld. And the old ENWorld was a website for and about 3E/D20.

I am well aware that a lot of the same arguments have been made over the course of edition changes past. I don't buy the claim that the level of market split in the past, at least from 2E -> 3E, was on the same order as what is happening now. The same arguments being made in no way indicates that the sides making the arguments are in the same proportions.

But, more than anything, new ENWorld is divided in ways that old ENWorld was not, purely by definition of how ENWorld came to be. It doesn't mean anything.

So, in 2002 I voted only 3e. How times change! I'll probably be resuming my 3e campaign in October, but the games I'm currently running are 4e and 1e/OSRIC, and I've recently run a lot of B-X/Labyrinth Lord too. I didn't run 1e AD&D for nigh on 15 years, I was totally burnt out on it, but I restarted a few weeks ago, the 5th session is on Tuesday, and I'm absolutely loving it.

& I just finished GMing a 1e session for my wife & son (at her request) 40 minutes ago. He's definitely too young for 1e (he's 3!) but it was still fun.
