Which Edition to Buy

FYI: mere possession of pirated IP can get you in trouble, just like possession of physical stolen property.

I totally agree with that, but I am pretty certain the following are legal (noting in all cases that you CANNOT distribute, of course):
- taping something from TV to your VCR, DVD or DVR/TiVO for personal use
- copying a song you (legally) download from your computer to your iPod or burning it to a personal use CD
- recording your LP's onto cassette and playing them on your Walkman (remember that?)
- transferring your LPs, cassettes, 8-tracks and CDs to MP3s and playing them on your iPod

The following is unclear as to its legality & has been litigated to no certain conclusion as far as I know:
- downloading a song that you already own in another format (record, cassette, 8-track or CD) simply because it is easier than ripping it based on the technology you have available.

I see pdf's of books you buy as the equivalent of the latter. But, yes, you could be sued and the outcome would be uncertain. I was just giving my moral perspective, for what it is worth.

Basically correct, which is why I continued to use the word "pirated", which, at least in my line, refers to IP that has been illegally created/obtained.
