Which fighter shall I choose?

Donthor

First Post
I am currently stuck in a dilemma regarding which player to play for a AD&D 3rd ed. The Dm has planned a world and adventures to go right through all the levels (he claims to 20th level!). I have discussed both of them with him and stuck trying to work out which one. I have created a history for both, and the DM says that both will fit very nicely. I got some good roles (which always help) and planned a long history with plenty of scope for the DM to play with. I am also the first of the group to flesh out a character so I cant depend on the old strategy of working which character fits the group best.

1st Character:
1/2 Orc Barbarian. Aka "Kaag"
Vitals (with Mods):
str:20
dex:15
con:17
int:11
wis:12
cha:11

History:
Raised until around 10 to 13 years old he was raised by his human mother (who was impregnated by an orc during a raid). After another raid by the same orc clan (a clan that has a rep for being very ferocious and amazing fighters. The sort of clan that other orcs are afraid of messing with any of its members). His father id's him after he is the sole survivor and adopts him back to his orc family where his spends the rest of his growing up learning the ways of battle. His Father is then killed by a powerful wizard (or so he thinks) to which he vows revenge. his only clue to who this wizard is a signet ring in his possession.

Description:
He is tall even for a 1/2 orc and very well built. He is covered head to toe in tattoo's that identify him with his infamous orc clan. Anyone who knows anything about orcs would recognize these tattoo’s in a moment, but are often then confused by the fact that he is a 1/2 breed. With the power and size, he would be the spearhead of any group attack.

Personality:
he was born to fight. He will jump at any fight that he thinks he can win (even some that realistically he has no chance) which happens a lot due to his amazingly short fuse (He wont be afraid to knock out another PC if they tease him).
The big problem that faces Kaag is his mixed background. His is torn between is love of the fight of his fathers orc people and the morals and code of ethics bestowed on him by his mother and her husband. He trusts no-one (plan is that he will eventually trust at least one member of the group) but those who earn his trust, he will die for. However he will go along with the group for he believes that they are the key to finding his fathers killer.

He is also faced with the problem that he hates and loathes all magic and its users but knows that one day he will need to learn about and trust magic in order to one day drink from the skull of his fathers killer.

Character 2:
Dwarven Paladin
Vitals with mods:
str:17
dex:13
con:20
int:12
wis:13
cha:13

History:
(this is best broken into two parts: His Clan vs. the character.)
Clan History:
His clan was once the bravest and strongest of all the clans, but it was in a poor location (right next to a major orc infested area). Then there was a great battle, that for some unknown reason the dwarfs lost. Fleeing there kingdom, they settled down anew with the support of the other dwarvish clans and a human kingdom. Though heavily weakened, they continued being proud and strong, the true masters of the race. However they where betrayed and wiped out once and for all by the orcish armies. Such was the loss and disgrace to the dwarvern community that the clans name was stricken from they racial history and has been long forgotten.
However a few did survived the second battle and went into hiding for fear of being hunted down and exterminated once and for all. They now live scattered and un-united. Hiding, fearing persecution if their true identity was known. Only a few important dwarfs know of they existence. The clan lay in waiting. They wait for a chosen one to come forth and reunite the forgotten clan and find the lost king and take back what is theirs, both the kingdom, and more importantly, their clan name.

The character:
He is a descendent of the elite guard of the former king of this lost clan. At his berth an event happened (still being worked on by the DM) the declared him the choosen one to reunite the clan and find the king. Trained from birth he has been secretly sent out to find his people and their lost king. He has been sent in secret for fearing of his existence, if it was too well known, would lead to him being tracked down and killed before he had begun and task.

Description:
fairly average looking for a dwarf. Med height and build. Pretty standard actually. However his old coat of arms on all his weapons (his shield holds the dwarvern gods symbol). On his chest, over his hart, a coat of arms. He is the true dwavern soldier. However if asked, he gives a dummy clan name that belongs to supposedly a small clan, but those who know the truth, will recognize him through the coat of arms and where he claims he hails from.

Personalty:
Although a paladin, he is very quite. Prefers to think about his actions before he leaps forward. Around dwarfs however, he slips into the traditional paladin model. He is the leader of his people. He is meant to be the epitome of what a dwarf should strive be. Strong, tough, disciplined and religious. Sometimes he also can be a little too proud of his heritage.

However he doubts himself. The weight of a people is heavy upon his shoulders. Any wrong action could spell the end of his clan. He feels this with every choose he makes. He also cannot reveal himself or his mission to anybody except dwarfs of the highest rank in dwarvern society (high priest are the exception who know who he is before meeting him by the signals they are given by their gods).

The other major problem that he faces is that times have changed. even though the clan was once so strong, they are all but forgotten. normal dwarfs have no clue to who he really is. Some things though have remained the same. The clan is still hunted and reuniting it with a king who no-one knows will not be easy.

I like the Dwarven Paladin. Seems to be a really well thought-out complex character that would be fun to play, in that he has a lot of complexities to his personal history that the DM could use in campaign development, as well many opportunities for role-playing.

I am currently playing a Dwarven Ranger who is a ranger because he can't stand the stuffiness and long-windedness of this clan's leaders. He is outside away from them and left alone. It is fun. I think Dwarves can make some very interesting specialized classes, considering their racial abilities.

Half orc background catches me as very unrealistic, but I don't care to describe (it's DnD afterall, what's realism matter). Due to that one opinion though, I think the dwarven paladin is a better choice.

I like the Dwarven Paladin over the Half-Orc too. For the same reasons creamsteak probably has. Now, if the Half-Orc's background history had been written differently....I might've voted for him. With the stats he has he's quite an impressive specimen for the Barbarian lifestyle. With a little tweaking of the background history, he could be made to be a more believable and richer character.

All in all, you could toss a coin if you're still undecided. I'm thinking both characters could lead to cool roleplaying. But at this moment, and with what you've written....I like the Dwarf more.
