Got the important rulebooks (i.e. Core + PHBs + AV series + Power series) and all the Campaign Setting books to date. From the list, only the PHB3, Power 2 series, and Dark Sun CS books are definitely on the buying list. Most of the other books don't appear to be that useful to me (i.e. the Dragon books, the Plane books, the extra DMG/MMs, etc).

I'm a DDI subscriber so I don't actually need any of the crunch books although I have bought several of them on a whim, which is a habit that wastes too much of my money. Otherwise, I'll only buy books which are useful for me, and since my homebrew setting is rather different from the default world (and was in previous editions too) most of the fluff material is of limited use. I will buy setting material if I'm likely to play a game in that setting.

I have core sets 1 & 2, all the current power books and forgetton realms. I'm not too interested in getting hard copies of the dragon books or other fluff ones since I just use a DDI subscription to get the monster data. I only really get books my players would use for their PCs.

This presents an interesting breakdown. Now obviously EN World isn't entirely representative of the 4ed gaming populace, but it isn't entirely unrepresentative either. How so? Because EN World is comprised mainly of serious to hardcore gamers and serious to hardcore gamers spend a lot of money on books (whereas casual D&D players will only buy the PHB and one or two other books, like one of the Power books or PHB 2).

I'm wondering if Wizards of the Coast has done any of this sort of research and if not, why not? I mean, couldn't they do a poll like this and then look at the results for, say, the Player's Strategy Guide, and rethink their decision to pour resources into a project that will net less profit?

It is also interesting to note that the percentage numbers for the various series' tend to go down (i.e. Martial Power sold more than Arcane Power which sold more than Divine Power which sold more than Primal Power which will presumably sell more than MP 2; now this may have something to do with passing time, or it may be that less and less folks are buying "splats" due to D&DI).

Keep 'em coming, folks. I only get paid by WotC if I get 200+ responses.

JUST KIDDING!

I'm wondering if Wizards of the Coast has done any of this sort of research and if not, why not?

WotC does huge amounts of market research, through multiple sources (including, among others, both online and at various gaming events, plus of course access to sales figures for previous books/editions and download figures for articles of different subjects on DDI).

Of course it's not always accurate; no market research is. But--don't get me wrong, this is a really fun thread :)--I guarantee you that a single poll on ENWorld isn't going to net them much in the way of new information.

I own the Player's Handbook I, Dungeon Master's Guide I, and the Monster Manual I. That's probably all I will buy until they release something for Greyhawk.
