I think the idea is an interesting one, though I think that it should be a bit more customizable for wizards (and, if this how wizards are, I have to wonder what sorcerers & warlocks will be like).

I could see one practitioner prefer a wand, while another prefers a staff, and yet another an orb, but all could be really adept at force magic. Perhaps another uses a tome, another uses an amulet, another a fetish bag, etc.

Then again, I could see war-oriented wizards using a spear instead of a staff (sorta-kinda like a dual-purpose wizard's staff/polearm), or a sword. Heck, I could see a wizard using a cane or a club as the channeling item. However, I also see staff and wand more or less fitting in the same category--a sceptre of arcane power, if you will.
(Bolded for emphasis)
Ever since the 2nd or 3rd Harry Potter movie (can't recall which one, the one Lucius Malfoy appeared in first) I've had this mental image in my head of a wizard who carries a cane (which acts as his staff) with the handlepiece that detached to reveal a wand. That was just sweet.
On-Topic, I liked the first draft better. It sparked my brain with more openings for twisting, adding, and expanding than the new draft does.

I like the revised versions. I don't mind the tradition names, with the exception of Golden Wyvern. Even with the too wide graphic from above, I have a hard time equating the names with kung-fu schools.

I figure that the names and implements will not be as tied into the mechanics as people think, but instead wizards will have a tradition, which in turn will have a favored implement. Aside from that, I don't see it as being tied into those three implements or those six tradition names.

In the end, though, we are all in the same "wait and see" boat. I just happen to be sitting here with a smile on my face. :)

I don't like the tradition names, but I like the removal of the Tome. However, I wouldn't mind bringing the Tome back in as the "generalist's implement" which offers a smaller bonus, but boosts every category.

However, I think the implements idea's kinda bad overall. I don' mind the idea of having wizzies have some arcane focus used in casting, as that's a pretty iconic thing when you imagine a high fantasy wizard, but I'm not so sure I like the way these are shaping up.

I like the original one more. But they can sprinkle the flavour of the revised version into an extra paragraph - as examples (though I dislike the names).

Cheers, LT.
