Which non-core monsters should have been core?

I'll add Cyclops to the list of real-world monsters. Yeah, there are a fair number of core giants already, but still, cyclops is pretty iconic as mythological giants go.

I'm sad. It took until post 88 for someone to mention the cyclops.

Speaking of "real" Greek giants, Legends & Lore (2e) listed the Gigantes, that I thought were kinda cool. Not as cool as finding out that Mouseferatu, an actual real world game-designer, is impressed by a game design idea I had -- especially right after I suggest an article for Dragon Compendium 2 on another thread only to find it's an Erik Mona fave as well.

It is true that the cyclops was obvious, even regular non-geeks on the street know them. Maybe they were too obvious.

I dunno. The only creatures I can get behind as "core" are the extra genies and death knights. And Yeti. Catoblepas? Why was that an interesting monster?

I actually like a lot of the monsters they chose to include that I wouldn't have suspected, like vargioulle and Inevitables.

Alot of the other creatures mentioned are nostalgia-bites, not very useful to an ongoing campaign, and hazards really simplified green slime and yellow molds and stuff. Who cares if they're statted. They should have done that to shriekers and violet fungi.

I never found Modrons very interesting.

I'm also more interested in the question of why some creatures were included, like Grey Renders. What the heck is that but a crabby pile of hit points. Things like the digester and the sonic whozits at least have a schtick. Krenshar are the 3 e flumph. How many fish races do you really need? Aranea? Tojandia? Arrowhawks? Girallons? Spider Eaters?

Yeek.

What it comes down to, is, one man's Githyanki is another man's flumph.
