Which of these two directors would you choose for the next D&D Movie?

  • Peter Jackson

  • Courtney Solomon

I think the seven people that have voted for Courtney Solomon must be absolute Tolkien fun-boys who were annoyed with the changes Peter Jackson made in "Followship" and were voting out of spite without actually having a clue who Courtney Solomon is.

I have no idea what you guys are talking about- there is no D&D movie. Same as Terminator 2, Alien: Ressurection and Batman and Robin never got made :)
You can deny it. I prefer to acknowledge it for what it is: a mistake that should never be repeated in the future. :p

I voted for Courtney, and I am the farthest thing from a Tolkien fanboy.

I voted for him for a few reasons:

1) I know he knows and loves the game.
2) Peter Jackson is doing a fantasy movie now- let him go do something else.
3) It was a pretty silly poll- and deserved a silly response. I think the discussion on other directors was the best thing that came out of it.

And you think this, obviously, because you haven't read any of the thread itself, which has any number of people (like me) explaining why they voted for Courtney Solomon.

Read the thread, THEN flame the posters. It's not rocket science.

I'll say this: I enjoyed the D&D movie, as a fun romp for 90 minutes of my time. However, it was too bland in many respects to be considered a strong movie. I DO know that, had they added all the scenes from the DVD that they wanted to, it would have been a much better movie.

The cast and crew, you could really tell, wanted to make a good movie. Everyone, except, perhaps Irons and Bruce (can't think of his last name), wanted to make it work. Unfortunately, due to plot holes, monetary constraints, and various snafus that plague many movies, it did not work well. Had Corey (I love how he became 'Courtney' Solomon shortly after the movie's release) Solomon had the $100 million dollar budget a movie that Peter Jackson had, maybe we would have seen some differences. Maybe not.

But I DO know that D&D really can't afford that much of a lackluster movie outing again. If it weren't for FOTR, I would not even have something current to point to as a good example of what I like about Dungeons and Dragons to those who do not know the game.

Even *I*, who up to now have been a pretty staunch supporter of this film (hey, I've seen it three times), have to admit that the number one reason why it didn't work well was because it was made by people who by and large didn't really know what they were doing.

I still liked it (I have no shame), and certainly monetary constraints contributed, but no amount of cash was going to make Thora Birch into an actress. Or that woman who played the ranger. What the heck was she wearing? I mean, seriously. What was that?

Now I want to see it again.

Help me.

I think Michael Bay should direct it. D&D with a big bombastic Aerosmith soundtrack and Bruce Willis or Nicholas Cage as Drizzt! Yeah, baby! :D

You didn't like T2?

Marina (played by Zoe McClellan) from the D&D Movie = :)

Agreed. Mmm.

Noooooooooo!

Anyway, to answer the question, I'd go with Peter Jackson. He has the required experience and talent. I applaud Corey's passion and for overcoming impossible odds of getting the film made, but if the goal is to make a good film, than I wouldn't let a nice inspirational story of personal triumph get in the way of that.

Moot point anyway. As already mentioned, a film like this wouldn't appeal to PJ. He would never make it in a million years.

Sam Raimi. Good choice, but to wrapped up right now.

Jim Cameron, my favorite choice. Violence, great visuals, good storytelling, memorable characters. He wouldn't make this film either, tho... its "way beneath him".

I appreciate Ridley Scott, but I do realize he's hit-and-miss. Loved Alien, Blade Runner(both cuts), and Gladiator. Most of the rest you can chuck. Never seen The Duelists....really want to, tho.
Nobody mentioned Thelma and Louise?

MY 100th POST!!!! YYAAAAAAAYYYY!!!!:D

Thought you might like to know...

All right, I'm not exactly a fan of the Dragonlance books. I have read all many if not all books set in the Dragonlance world, but that's more because I'm a speed-reader who runs out of fantasy books and libraries all too quickly.

But, based on the recent threads about D&D movies, I feel that this should not be missed.

The following was posted on www.theonering.net website yesterday. If this is already common knowledge, blame the time zone I'm in :).

A Heads-up for Dragonlance Fans
8/20/02, 1:32 pm EST - Tehanu

Slightly off-topic, but seeing as how there's bound to be Dragonlance fans among our readers, we'll pass on Alatar's news from the Tracy Hickman newsletter, which announced "The film rights for Dragonlance HAVE been optioned and that the project is proceeding although we are not able to give any details at this time."

So, take this discussion a little more seriously... you might be right about your choice of director!
