Our present group makes most of their own skill rolls. Even spots and listens which actually works out well since we throw in Role playing reasons why we failed. Such as myself (wizard) and the Wiz/fighter were talking over spell selection (mostly out of Character) when a spot check was requested. We both rolled ones so we went into detail how our characters were engrossed in a discussion of useful combat magics.
Often with bad rolls we justify it in some role playing manner that fits the character. Such as a narcocistic character would be studying themselves in a reflection etc.
I think It only works becuase we don't use the Out of character knowledge though in most cases with the whole group rolling certain skills (Spot/listen/Sense motive) some one makes it and passes along the info anyways.
