Whimper

I just had the horrible revelation that the WB Batman cartoon--the iconic one, with Kevin Conroy as Batman--is almost twenty years old!

And, as someone on Twitter just pointed out to me, Star Trek: The Next Generation is currently older than the original ST series was when TNG first came out. :.-(

2112

You know the people who are turning 21 years old this year? IOW, they are now are old enough to drink and generally be considered adults for all purposes in the USA?

They were 12 years away from being born when the first Star Wars movie was released, and 11 years away from being born from when the first Halloween and Alien movies were released.

And, while we're at it, Rush's 2112 was released 13 years before those people were born.

You hate me, don't you?

I was watching TNG today, remembering the good ol' days.

Me? I'm turning 43 in October, and I got to see the original Star Wars in its first theatrical run.

I got to wander through toy stores in frustrated amazement at the (as I recall) $29, 18" tall original fully articulated Alien toy with "action" inner jaws which I wanted SOOOOOO badly...and was too scared of to ask my parents to buy.

I played my first game of AD&D in the library of East Middle School of Aurora, CO in 1977. My PC (a human fighter with a 2HD sword) died- eaten by a Purple Worm- in the dungeon's cavernous and mist-filled penultimate room.

So I'm probably almost as much a grognard/geezer as anyone on this here site...whippersnapper.

Heh. The day I really started to feel old was when I realized (back in late 2008) that kids who were born the day my wife and I met were now driving.

I remember a story Paul McCartney told on a talk show about the first time he felt old.

He was riding in a subway car when a young lady recognized him...

"You're Paul McCartney!"

"Yes, yes I am- are you a fan?" he replied graciously.

"I'm a HUGE fan- I have all of your albums!" (She was practically vibrating with elation.)

"Really? Even all those old Beatles albums?"

A puzzled expression crossed her face..."You were in a band before Wings?"

Personally, though, my take on feeling old is this: don't.

Heh, I've had a lot of conversations like this recently. A (younger) friend told me, "My friends are getting married and having kids!" I wondered if this was new for her...

The only external pressure I feel to have kids is, of course, from my Mom. Whenever she hears about someone between her age and mine having their grandkids over or the like, she gives me The Eyeball.

In the next month or so, 2 of my closest buddies are turning 40. At least one guy is as paranoid about this as some women I know...and amusingly enough, he's the one of our triad who is in the best physical shape & all.

I mean, I'm often mistaken for being much younger than I am (thank you, DNA!), but he's a decent looking guy without any worries about how he looks...and yet, he's worried. Personally, I think he takes good enough care of himself that he is going to age as gracefully as any guy could ask for.

And he won't celebrate birthdays unless ambushed.

*note to self- plan ambush*
