im looking to build a character that uses a whip, maybe starting with a scorpion whip then going to a regular whip for the increased range once i get so it can do lethal damage. i was thinking of starting as a fighter or a bard and working towards whirlwind, combat reflexes, and possibly tripping or disarming. any suggestions for a cool whip using character would be great thank you

My only thought off hand is a fighter weapon specialist that focuses on whips.

YouTube links work better.

Also, E.N. Publishing put out a pdf on whips back in 3.5. Maybe ask your GM if you can use it. EN Arsenal - Whips was the title.

Don't forget the Archaeologist Archetype, for Bard. Given how obvious the association is, it'd be practically criminal not to at least consider it (if nothing else, to justify why not to use it when people ask).

Edit: not specifically for the Whip association, mind you- just for the other associations a character with a mastery of whips is likely to trigger in peoples' heads.

I'd do Archaeologist. It has the proficiency, and is better suited for combat than a normal bard, due to the swift action (but self-only) "inspire courage." Just be sure to get Lingering Performance to triple the anemic rounds/day.

Ultimate Combat introduced a feat chain for whips. IMO it's not worth the investment, but it's basically the only game in town for whip-focused material.

The Whip Mastery feat line is mandatory for such a build. Don't forget also the Prehensile Whip trait.

If older material is accessible, you can also look at the Whip-dagger and the Lasher PrC from the Sword & Fist book.

Watch this, it will give you some great ideas and a theme song for your character:
