Whips, Whip-daggers, Nagaika

First Post
So, I might be playing a Wizard/Alienist in an upcoming game, and was thinking about having him use a whip (for that whole tentacle theme). I've got a couple of questions that I want to be absolutely sure on:

1. If he doesn't have the exotic weapon proficiency, he still only suffers the -4 non-proficiency, right?

2. Are there any WotC weapon enhancements that give bonuses to tripping or disarming?

3. If whip is a +1 Whip, will it deal 1d3+1 subdual? Will it harm creatures with a +1 or better armor bonus, or creatures with a +3 or better natural armor bonus? If it is a +1 Flaming Whip, it inflict 1d6 of lethal fire damage, correct? Will that 1d6 of fire damage still damage creatures with sufficiently high armor or natural armor bonuses?

4. If the whip is a +1 Flaming Whip, will it deal 1d6 fire damage on a trip or disarm attempt?

5. If you aren't proficient with a whip, can you still use Weapon Finesse with it?

6. Last but not least, are the Nagaika and Whip-Dagger reprinted or updated for use with 3.5? (Particularly the Nagaika)

Thanks in advance.

1. Yes.

2. Look at Complete Warrior. If my memory serves me correctly, there's a Tripping enhancement (+1 bonus) that gives you a +4 on all trip attempts made with that weapon. (If it's not in Complete Warrior, I know it's in the Arms & Equipment Guide.) Also in Complete Warrior is the Disarming enhancement (+2 bonus) that negates any of the defender's bonuses for wielding a larger weapon or a two-handed weapon when disarming. So, in other words, that Frost Giant wielding that Greataxe gets no more bonus than if he were a human wielding a longsword. It's nice.

3. Correct on the first two questions- I'd say yes to the third one, though a strict rules lawyer could say that the weapon itself has to damage the enemy in order to deal the fire damage.

4. No. In order to deal the extra fire damage, you have to actually strike the target (that is, overcome their AC in an attempt to deal damage). Only one or two things come to mind (like the Rod of Thunder & Lightning) that can deal their extra elemental damage without actually hitting the target's full AC.

5. I don't see any reason why not.

6. Nope, and personally, I'm not a fan of the Nagaika. It just reeks of uber-cheese to me- it requires just as much proficiency as the whip, and it's better in every single regard (does more damage, deals lethal damage, isn't hindered by armor, and has a x3 crit). I may only be biased because one of the PCs in my group is OBSESSED with the Nagaika, but who knows.

So an enchanted whip ignores the normal whip restriction? (Can't damage foes with a certain amount of armor)

I was mainly looking for alternatives to the whip. But the more I think about it, the only thing I'll probably be doing with it is tripping or disarming. Hmmm, maybe I should make a series of spells around the idea, rather than using an actual whip...

No, he meant the fire damage bit.

A +1 whip still needs an unarmored foe to deal damage, and it's still non-lethal damage.

I'm personally of the opinion that a flaming whip can't damage an armored opponent. Not quite for the reason UltimaGabe gave - for example, a flaming sword can still deal fire damage even if the slashing damage is completely negated by DR - but because the flaming damage is dealt by the whip, and the whip explicitly cannot damage an armored opponent.

Just use the Whip Dagger from Arms and Equipment. It does 1d6 no str bonus (can be mighty) 15' reach ... can strike adjacent. deals lethal damage. If you are prof. with whips then you are prof with whip dagger. finesseable

Oops... misread the question. No, as far as I can tell the whip damage doesn't ignore the restriction.
