My group didn't even fully defeat him... got him to go mist form, leaving behind the sword and map... so the group grabbed and ran
Of course, I was pretty nasty with tactics up to that point and we had a really stupid moment from the monk {spoilers}[sblock]The group had bypasses the obviously trapped alter in the temple and were bashing the door down to the next room. It was taking them a while, so the monk got bored and went to see what was in the alters drawer....he timed it perfectly so that the trap triggered as the door got bashed in. Half the group tried to rescue him while the other half ran from the Giant Zombie

It didn't help that the Monk had been interested in using a Garrote, so we had just finished off some good rules for using it. I decided to have Lucan use one when they entered the Throne room, and rolled a Crit. Fortunately it was the NPC Rogue...unfortunately the PC's didn't get in fast enough to save her
I didn't have too much trouble with the repetitive chase, but I was ran it over 2 consequtive Saturdays. I did have problems running the Lightning rail sequence simply from the point of keeping track of the various factions and where they were on the battlemap...my group split up so I had to try and cover the *entire* train!
Anyway, agreed that when playing in a module based campaign the players need to take some inconsistancy and weirdness in stride.
