But still I'm not going to buy something in the hopes of getting something else for free. The product should be able to stand on its own.

I would agree. Any RPG product should be purchased--first and foremost, if not exclusively--based on that product itself.

However, I hope you would agree that if the company does advertise extras, it's not unreasonable for the customer to expect said extras.

Meh.

Unless they advertised the extra as "Free Web Extra" then its not a big deal.

I wonder how they should have advertised it as costing money?

Unfree Web Extra?

Web Extra That Will Cost You Some Money?

Sorry, no gettin' around this one - that was dirty, plain and simple. :\

Obviously someone at WW decided to make an extra $4.00 per book with roughly the same tactics car salesmen use to "upsell" you.

A simple "Fantastic Supplemental Material available online for just $4.00 for a limited time only!" would have been honest, clean, and not do further damage to the company's increasingly bad name.

Not to mention would it have killed them to make it a free download anyway? Or do their new Icelandic overlords not allow such frivolous behavior? :p

Bah, this is the same company that tried to get their players to pay them to play the game. You didn't buy their books, you bought "licenses" to use their content.

Um, no. That was a misunderstanding of a license that

A) did not mean what people took it to mean, and

B) would only have applied to specific types of formal organizations anyway.

I'm happy to call them on BS when it's real, but not when it's not.

Much as I'd love to jump in and defend WW, the fact is, "extra" certainly implies free.

If they were going to charge for it, the material should have been advertised as "an electronic-only product" that was heavily tied to the book. It shouldn't have been advertised as an "extra" at all.

Doesn't the fact that you have to input a credit card number and expiry date in order to download the file imply that there will be a cost to download it?

I mean, it definitely sucks that they're charging for it....but unless it's like "surprise, we just took $7 from your bank account", I'm not sure what the complaint is.

Several pages in the book say "well, we ran out of space for this monster, but it's an extra online for you." One monster's description is pretty incomplete without said extra, as well.

This really feels like an miscommunication in-house to me.

Everyone is trying to Nickle and Dime you to death anymore these days.
Literally. Did you hear the news recently on that grocery store chain that will soon be charging its customers 5 cents per plastic bag used to bag any groceries bought?

They also offer a 59 cent "deal" for a reusable bag that looks like a fancily folded blue tarp. :\

I am only glad that I do not have one of those stores near where I live, and I feel a bit of pity for those that do - and hope they have other grocery stores near by from which to buy their food.
