Who am I? Who is she?

An orc baby or a human baby ? What about baby mind-flayers that you have just turned into orphans that will die without someone/thing caring for them ?

Everyone knows mindflayers have no babies silly! :p

Sure they do - they're just baby neothelids. ;)

Back on target, I still say that the most important lesson to learn here is to clearly define a character at the start of play.

I'll agree having a clear concept at creation is a great idea and makes playing easier. That having been said while I have managed to keep skills, feats, and ability points to a character map personality is still elusive.

PC decision making should not be random. A player might not make the best decision, but at least it is the player's decision and not the luck of the dice.
FWIW, I agree completely.

You, the player, decide what your PC does.

....in fact, even after rolling dice, you, the player, decide what your PC does. It's not the Dice's fault your PC chose a particular action.

Why bother with the extra step? :)

I am running into the same problem with my sorceress. I find I sometimes just really have to sit and reflect on her alignment, how an action will be percieved, what actions she has taken in the past and where she wants to go. People can change- not always for the better. I agree with the previous posters that having a clear idea of the characters personality and short/long term goals is important. I too have had to do some of this on the fly. My sorceress is also the first character I played, but now that she is 17th level, I have had some time to reflect.
