Group debate after everyone's had a chance to review the rules, then discuss what changes we'd want to include (most, so far) and which we wanted to leave out (power attack changes, spell focus changes)

group debate, but i presume the DM will have veto power.

(IMO it's easier to play a system you don't like than have to GM one.)

As DM, I basically made the decision to go to 3.5, offering the option to discuss and/or retract the decision if the group disapproved -- while simultaneously preparing a conversion document so that no one would be forced to purchase the new PHB if they don't want to. I've also allow the option of retaining 3.0 characters for those affected by the changes if they don't want to switch.

So far: no argument, and everyone whose character would be affected prefers the 3.5 version to the 3.0.

i disagree.;)

i wanted to go Original D&D (1974) the only true game. all the other editions are just poor imitations of the real thing.:D

but no one else took me seriously.

Tell me Diaglo, was the introduction of the "Thief" class in Greyhawk the beginning of the end or was it the "Druid" in Eldrich Wizardry? (stupid druids, they were villians or occasional allies, not PCs.)

Since my wife and I own the only copies of the PHB in our group anyway (I told the other players--one ex-1E and two new rpgers--to wait until July to get the revised PHB), this DM (who's getting the books, as well as an extra PHB for his wife's birthday) made a unilateral decision to go to 3.5. If a substantial portion of the group had owned rulebooks, though, we would have had a nice discussion, allowing everybody to provide input before I made my unilateral decision. ;)

It should be a group decision but if the DM doesn't want to then the group is kinda SOL. Also the same goes for the DM if he or she wants to switch and the group refuses.

Luckily, that isn't going to be a problem for me. I somehow managed to get 10 people in two different gaming groups to try the Hero System with only a little quibbling. As of now, the Hero System games are the main home games. Of course everyone is still getting their D&D fix through RPGA so it seems everyone is happy at the moment.
