Group decision, for the most part, but I think if a DM invests the money in the new edition the game is eventually going to switch over even if that means some players depart and others join in...or a second group is formed.

I agree with mark 100% here. I'll be doing a lot of conversion work I'm sure as our group uses a lot of different non-official d20 books but the group will be 3.5 after some time is spend digesting the material.

Most of our group is pretty much in the "ooh- new books! SHINY! Must buy!" category, so it was pretty much certain we'd all get 3.5 and use it. As for me, I was certain of the switch when my girlfriend swatted a big juicy bug with my PH the other day.

Heh, heh, heh! Ah, the stains our pride and joys aquire in the presence of non-gaming Significant Others. (Coffee, soda, one of my players has a book with a big, nasty cigarette burn... Now a squashed bug!) Did she smash it with the cover? Or did she just close the book on the poor thing?

The 'Oooh! Shiny! seems to be running among most of my players as well. (I am sending in an order for 5 PH, 2MM, and 1 DMG to Amazon on Monday. So much for my planned DM Fiat...)

The Auld Grump, who's faith in the goodness of human nature is being shaken by folks actually doing nice things for each other...

Well since I am the DM I stated we would be upgrading to 3.5. All my players were all for it so it was not a problem. I am very picky about who I run for and it pays off in the end.

Quite honestly I am happy with the changes as are my players!

I guess I'm in the opposite situation from most DMs (at least those who are posting here). I have absolutely NO interest in "upgrading." Originally I was quite excited, but I don't really care for many of the changes I've seen -- I prefer my own house rules. So regardless of my player's opinions, I don't plan on running 3.5....

As I'm the DM for our group I made the decision. No upgrading. The changes to the system aren't so little as they made them out to be and I have no interest in wasting my time converting monsters and NPC's in the various 3rd party D20 books I've bought and use. If someone else wants to upgrade they can spend the money and buy the books and run it themselves. I guess this means, beyond a few Star Wars books, I've bought my last d20 book.
