Who else considers he has now enough d20 stuff and won't buy more?

Hi,

I have too much stuff -- more than I can ever read, let alone actually use. However, I still buy more! Cool stuff comes out and I go into Igor-mode. The difference is that I'm getting much more selective these days -- I didn't buy any of the Races of X books, for example.

Actuallly as I didn't start with 3e till 2003, I missed out on the big rush at the start and by being pretty selective I still don't have that much d20 stuff (no more than a dozen products at the moment) there is still an incentive for me to pick up things, and as I buy adventures, which do have a need to be replaced/supplemented by new products when they've been run I think Necromancer and Judges Guild will still be getting my gaming purchases - actually Mongoose's Conan range will also be seeing me buying stuff too.

I find that I could do almost any game or campaign with my library but look forward to future purchases not because I need them, but because I'm curious to see what the new material will be like.

Is it something I can use to replace something I already have?

Is it something I can add to my campaign and allow the players access to it?

Is it well written?

Is it well illustrated?

Are there any ideas that approach an older issue from a new way?

My buying is slowing down. I don't buy the races or climate books by WOTC. But I will buy setting/source books such as Conan, Wilderlands, CSIO, and Mesopotamia. I'll always buy modules, whether from Necromancer, Goodman, Monkeygod ( their gone!), Kenzer, Paizo, or WOTC.

So my buying is far from over. Plus there is Mutants and Masterminds, GURPS 4e, Castles and Crusades, Shadowrun, L5R, and several other game systems I have beeen eyeing. Plus I have heard attempts are being made to release Pendragon again.

So d20 may be losing steam, but rpg's in general are not, at least with me.

I haven't bought D20 stuff in years.

I bought the 3.0 PH, MM and DMG.

I bought the Star Wars D20 and the CoC d20. Haven't bought anything since.

Got everything I needed (plus my imagination) in those books.

Yes, I have more than enough d20 stuff. I got rid of 2 big boxes of books on eBay late last year. About a month ago, I sold another 2 boxes of AD&D stuff at a store 2 counties over than actually trades in that stuff (unlike my FLGS). And I still have more than enough. I hope to trade some of it at a con next weekend. It's all good, I just have too much to ever run it all (or even a good-sized fraction of it).

No, I'm not stopping new purchases altogether. I have slowed down the rate of acquisition, though. Now, I'm mainly looking for modules that offer something a little different. I subscribe to Dungeon, so I have lots of generic adventures. Now, I'm mainly looking for modules that offer a bit of a unique campaign setting, too. Mesopotamia is a good one that I already have. I have Slavelords of Cydonia on order (although it's beginning to look like I'll never get it), even though I don't have Grim Tales. I am looking forward to getting The Horned God, and I might look into Northern Crown if some adventures are offered (otherwise, I will try to give it a miss).

Well, maybe that's not true. I've never purchased much in the way of third-party products, being that I've found most to be either crap, or boring. Those that I have purchased have been from companies that make other RPGs (Green Ronin, Alderac, Sword & Sorcery aka White Wolf). However, the last third-party product I've purchased was the Black Company setting, and I doubt that'll be heavily supported. I've become dissatisfied with Malhavoc, and with AEG no longer producing SFA or Rokugan d20, well, there's nothing else third-party that I anticipate picking up.

I have so much d20 material that some of it is going up on eBay soon. Between 2001-2003 it seems like I bought up everything that I could find for this system. They could have sold me Harlequin romance novels if they'd taken a red crayon and scribbled "d20" on the back. Towards the end of 2003 my purchases became far more selective and for the entire year of 2004 I only purchased six d20 books.

That being said, I don't see myself drawing the line because my shelves are full. I've had the time to learn from past purchases what material I need and enjoy and what I can do without. So, I'm getting rid of the excess and taking this time to look back at some of the better d20 books I might have missed along the way.

As for what's ahead, that's difficult to say. I can't say there's much for me from WotC until Maelstrom/Stormwrack appears and even that's guess work at this point. If I really enjoy that book, I may consider going back and picking up the other environmental books in time. Either way, I've certainly got more than enough d20 material, but there's a good 1/4 that never leaves the shelves. It's time for that stuff to go and make room for my more frugal future purchases.
