Power? T'cha!

The only real question is who gets first dibs on the loot, man.

But seriously, here's an interesting idea: have friends who don't give a rat's ass about "who has the power" and then game with them. Then you don't ever have to worry about a question like this.

they said there was no such thing as a stupid question, but apparently that was wrong

Actually, it's more like the Legal and Executive branches of government, if you ask me. :) The DM has the powers of setting the campaign, instituting rulings, and having final say on those rulings in his game. The Players have the power to veto the game being played, and ultimately whether the DM is DM'ing or not for that session. Either side can walk, causing gridlock, but both sides lose out if they do.

I've always been a firm believer in "DM has final authority in-game", but that's as far as I'm willing to take that little power-trip. :)

[Here is an idea maybe it does not deal with my group but i want to get a feel for what other groups are like. I hate it when people post a question and then they get dumped on by people who say why not just game and have fun. They come here for ideas and to share ideas, not for people to act like they are better then other people.

There are LOTS of players out there, many of whom will not put in the time and effort to DM. At least in my area, good DMs are in demand and players are plentiful, so IME the DM has more power.

However, my basic philosophy about gaming is that a DM should run the game (s)he wants and players should shop around until they find a game they like. That way, everybody has control over their own gaming destiny. :)

In a metagame sense, the DM has the power. It's been my experience that DMs are always in greater demand than players, and it's always easier for a DM to find a new player than for a player to find a new DM. Especially an individual player vs. the DM, because that player is going to have to convince the other players to go through the trouble of searching out a new DM, rather than just dumping the player and continuing to play until a replacement player is found.

In a campaign, the players and DM hold equal power. While the DM controls all the other action in the campaign world, the players still control their own characters, and the game centers around those characters. A player can just as easily demolish a campaign as a DM can, which is why the best games are composed of people who recognize that all parties--players and DM--are working toward the same goal, for everyone to have fun.

Is it the dm or the players. To me it is the pc for if the game is unfair, the pc can leave and find a new DM. I think to many people have the IDea a DM is a god, but they can be replaced just like a pc

It's the first time I hear that the DM is seen as a god. Maybe it's time for me to start a cult heh?! :p

Anyway, I don't think it's on the level of DM vs Players. A good session is due both to good players and a good DM. And as for replacing players or DM it just depends on the availability of gamers around. Recently in our group, a player has expressed the wish to DM. I was okay since I was burnt out of DMing, and please at the prospect of playing a munchkin character (where I strictly forbid munchkins when I run!). However, the first gaming session was total crap. The DM did not know the rules (and didn't care not knowing, and I don't exagerrate in telling he didn't know them), didn't prepare anything, didn't use stat blocks yet had no idea of usual stats for monsters used, and was incoherent with his improvisations. I told I wouldn't continue playing with him, but now who is to be the next DM? Me again...

DMs have double shock POWAH!

I totally agree with Crothian, however, some areas may have an abundance of DMs - I know ours does not.
