Who Is Going to Pony Up for the Early OGL?

Privateer probably won't. They've got enough of their own stuff to put out this year. It isn't worth throwing $5000 at WotC and hiring new staff/taking staff off existing products just to take a risk on the third party 4e market.

You won't see any serious announcements from anyone until we get a look at the actual license language.

According to the call yesterday, we sign an NDA, and get a look at the license. Then we decide whether to cough up 5K, at which point we can see the rules.

Nobody is going to commit to "ponying up" without seeing what we're getting into, legally.

(and, to be completely honest, the idea that we can't see the rules until AFTER we've committed is a bit of a red-flag issue, as well.)

Okay I'm confused...there's a thread where Necromancer Games is claiming their "IN" and in conjunction with Paizo, will have product for Gen Con. But in the abovepost... it seems as if Erik Mona hasn't seen the OGL yet and hasn't made a decision either way. So what gives?

I believe that Necromancer is publishing its own line of products in partnership with Paizo Publishing, not that Paizo will have editorial control over what Necromancer does. I'm assuming this is similar to how they worked with their former partners.

How d'you figure? They already do 3e stuff, and from what they've said before, they're interested in moving to 4e. Presumably the same staff doing 3e are the ones who would be working on 4e stuff, so there's no new staff needed if they switch. Of course, as famously slow as their d20 releases are, maybe they WILL decide to just wait until the SRD is free anyway...

No one outside of WotC has seen the OGL yet. Companies will begin to see it in the next few weeks, as NDAs get signed.

It doesn't make sense for any company to buy the OGL Developer Kit unless they think that they can sell a whole lot of product (and at a profit!) in those five months. And people work really far ahead; companies like Green Ronin already have a fairly full schedule for 2008, and won't be able to take advantage of the 4e book trade in 2008 because they had to have all that information back in October.

Well, Clark is, apparently. Of course, he is a lawyer...and a demon prince. Talk about a double whammy!

I never said that Paizo will have editorial control over Necromancer. What I'm asking is on the Paizo board Erik Mona is claiming that he still hasn't made a decision on 4th ed. either way until he sees the OGL. Meanwhile on this board Necromancer Games claims both they and Paizo are in conjunction and have already decided to go "IN" on 4e, and will have products for GenCon. I'm not a Necromancer fan but I enjoy Paizo's stuff and am wondering has a decision really been made by Paizo, and if so why is Erik Mona denying it?

With all that talk about changing various Demons to Devils, Orcus is probably a Devil Prince now, meaning he has even better skill with the legalese than before! :D
