I'm surprised that no one is saying another fighter. I've always found that you can never have too many fighters, plus its easy to customize them in different ways so that they don't seem too similar.

My current group has nine players and we still haven't got around to having a bard:
Ftr4 (gladiator)
Ftr4 (dwarf)
Ftr2/Rog2 (swashbuckler)
Ftr2/Clr2 (moving forward as cleric from here)
Ftr4 (aiming for custom paladin prestige class)
Wiz4 (evoker)
Rog4 (aiming for bounty hunter)
Druid4
Psion4 (shaper)

Personally, my number 5 has usually been a psion or pyschic warrior...

In a 2e game with five players, our group was a fighter, bard, mage, crusader (Spells and Magic) and psionicist. We were taking down giants at 6th level!

Ever since then, we have our #5 as psion or bard (if psion isn't allowed)

5th member...I'd build a munchkiny character that can do TONS of damage. If we've convered all the adaptable stuff, why not focus on one aspect?

OMG, you guys have 9 PCs with only ONE Clr2??

How do you guys manage? Must be a sale on healing potions...

Yeah it's always good to have someone disposable around, who really isn't as good at, well, anything as anyone else.

Haha Bard are great fill in Characters. I l2 Barbarian lx Bard can fight, heal , summon monsters, has a few blast spells -- buff the whole party and is often good with a bow

Whatelse could you want

In a party of 5 I like
Fighter or Barb/Fighter-- Tank

Rogue or Ranger/Rogue-- Scout

Cleric

Wizard or Sorcerer-- Our group prefers Sorcerers, we don't do spell versitility

I got about halfway down the thread and I said to myself "Oh Boy! I'm gonna be the first with a Prisinor gag!". I should have known better.

In any case....

Low levels: Bard. The songs are better when you have more people and they can chain-heal with their sorcorer-like casting of cure spells.

High levels: Druid. KA-POW! Lots of damage over a wide range at long distances. Turns that Army of Evil into Orc-Ka-Boab.

At low levels, I'd say fighter-type, but beyond that, I'd go for cleric or psychic warrior.

Usually, the #5 PC is the multi-classed nightmare trying to qualify for some strange prestige class...

At low levels, I vote druid. Get the outdoor skills, the healing, the animal companion. Brings a lot to the table from 1st level + "backup" cleric.
