Gaining a spell level is FAR more powerful than gaining non-spell abilities.
I don't think anyone's disputing that. |)ar|{ even stated straight out that Clerics are high-powered. But as he says, it's not about the power level - it's about whether the class captures players' interest. Cleric class progression, as it stands, is boring. Making it more interesting, even at the cost of raw power, would help make the class more attractive to players.

In my campaign, I removed the divine spellcasting classes and assigned their spells to the arcane spellcasters. Belonging to the priesthood has nothing to do with your character class.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. If you replace the bonus spell chart with "choose severl of: breath like a dragon, raise the dead, teleport to any other plane, and the other 15+ spells clerics get each day" it's a FAR more interesting class than any other non-spell caster. Not only does a cleric get far more variety and better choices on what powers they get, they get to pick different ones every day. One day they can fight like a fighter, next day they can blast like a wizard, next day they can outclass a rogue, and the whole time they're the best healer class in the game.
