Who plays paintball?

Just wondering. And if so, do you, or have you played, scenario paintball (ie. 24+ hour games)?

Out of my gaming group of 7 people, 6 of us play paintball, with 5 of us being on the same scenario team (Team FUBAR out of Texas). Just wondering who else may play.

I have played once, but I wasn't overly impressed.

I will be playing in a larp that will be using airsoft weapons for some optional combat scenarios.

I played once, and had an awesome time. The guys from my job are planning another outing when it gets warmer.

What really grinds my gears is when these "regulars" come with their paintball howitzers and play against me and most of the people I know who are just renting the crap guns. It's not a level playing field.

Kenobi65 - Sorry to hear you had a bad time. Were you playing at a regular field, or out with friends? I have heard stories about people playing outlaw (ie. not at a field) ball and playing with unchronographed guns (pc - markers). Usually shooting at 300+ FPS, which can really hurt a person.

Umbran - You probably already know this, but I will say it anyways, be sure to wear protective eyewear, even with airsoft guns. I've played airsoft a few times, it was fun, but there were times when you had no clue you had been hit because of clothing, etc.

Krunchyfrogg - heh, love the name! That's what we named a building at a MOUT site we played at, Crunchy Frog's Cantina (taken from misremembering the name of a bar in town called Crazy Frogs). As for playing against "regulars", the problem for a field is that there may not be enough players out there to split the two groups. So it becomes a question of what are the regulars supposed to do then? We (my team) have been asked in the past to "tone it down" some. I agree with that to a point, but even then, why should the experienced player be forced to not play his or her best? I am not a tournament player, and don't have a fast trigger, but I have been accused of playing to hard before because I managed to get around the backside of the opposing team. It isn't just a problem for the "non-regulars", it is a problem for those of us that have played for awhile as well. The only way you are going to get a level playing field like you want is to pay extra for a private group. Then it is just you and your friends, and you all have the same guns. Beyond that it is just getting out there and playing, and if you enjoy it, learning how to beat those howitzers.

The other thing to consider is trying another field. Not all fields have experienced players running around with high dollar guns. In Houston, there are two fields that most of the experienced players go to, and several that cater to the players with little experience.

Finally, try a scenario. You have role-playing (so far I have played a major character twice, once I managed to break the casino at a mobs game by figuring out a no-lose system and the second time I had to do a dance for the greek oracle giving visions... she said she would never ask a member of my team to dance again... heh), actual missions that affect the outcome of the game, and can play anywhere on the field for as long as you want to, as long as you can get there without getting shot. Plus you have lots of targets and friends. Most games are around 200+ on a single field at the same time, though I have been to games with over 1200 players on the field. I even played with William Shatner at his first charity paintball game in Chicago. Many people may dog the man, but he was a lot of fun, and he stayed on the field the majority of the day playing. Of course, he had a personal bodyguard named Ike who carried a shield everywhere he went to block shots on Mr. Shatner, but those are the perks!

At a "real" paintball facility, with their "stock" guns. I don't *think* I'm a wimp, but when you get a direct hit with a paintball (esp. if you get one that decides it wants to bounce rather than detonate), it leaves a welt, and hurts like nobody's business. And, the fish-oil-based paint reeked. I suppose it could have been worse -- one of the guys I was with took a direct hit in the family jewels, and he about passed out from the pain.

Kenobi65 - Man, I am sorry to hear that. Bouncers always hurt worse than one that breaks and leave bigger welts. I could go into all kinds of possible explanation, etc. but the fact is, that just sucked! As for getting hit in the jewels, been there, done that, without a cup. And it was a bouncer too. That was no fun (especially since I was reffing at the time).

My point is that the one time I did go, there were about 30 people from my job going, and about 25 of them didn't own any equipment. I think it would have been more fun for the whole crew to either all use the same stuff, or just play without the 5 guys who obviously do this all the time.

I use to play all the time, generally with my gaming buddies and co-workers. But I hung up my mask after playing a gamers vs. military (co-workers). I choose to be on the gamers side and yes as we had done much more paint ball then my co-workers, but it still didn't stop them from being a little peved that we were owning them most of the day. So when we took a break, a co-worker decided that he (while I was pulling my mask off to get water) was going to shoot me in the head. Don't remember much after that. Been told that I dropped as he was maybe 5 feet from where I was standing. Large bruse among other issues (when I woke up I had to be held back as I was trying to fight as a temporay blind man), I then retired on the spot....thinking about getting back into it...just no more co-workers with me...

krunchyfrogg - I understand, just trying to point things from another viewpoint as well. Often, we all forget that things work both ways.

chakken98 - man, that is almost worth filing charges on the guy, it is definitely assault if you guys were no longer playing, etc.. Idiots like that give the sport a bad name. I hope you have a better time the next time around.
