Who said Familiars don't get darkvision (coz they're magical beasts)?

Hi there!

I think it was the predominating opinion here, that familiars do not gain darkvision for becoming a magical beast during their transformation to a familiar.

Here's the proof, that they do!

MM p. 306 "Augmented Subtype" --- "For example, a wizard's raven familiar has ... the traits of a magical beast."
MM p. 311 "Magical Beast" --- Traits: "Darkvision out to 60 feet and low-light vision."

Then they get both, no arguments.

Augmented Subtype: A creature receives this subtype whenever something happens to change its original type. Some creatures (those with an inherited template) are born with this subtype; others acquire it when they take on an acquired template. The augmented subtype is always paired with the creature’s original type. A creature with the augmented subtype usually has the traits of its current type, but the features of its original type.

It does say usually.

In 3.5 yes, but in 3.0 they didn't.

Yep, I'm referring to 3.5 only.

I had asked that a while ago, and got many different opinions (probably because of the difference), that's why I wrote this! :)

"It retains the appearance, Hit Dice, base attack bonus, base save bonuses, skills, and feats of the normal animal it once was, but is treated as a magical beast instead of an animal for the purpose of any effect that depends on it's type."

That's the part that makes thing's fuzzy for me. I do agree, I think, with familiars having the low-light vision and darkvision since it's not explicitely stated in the phb entry. I'd rather they had both anyway, but the statements seem to contradict each other a little.
