Who was right

*I haven't waded through the whole thread*

My own groups solution to situations like this is to divide treasure as though there is an extra party member. If something gets damaged/lost or even an expensive one shot item gets used and it's agreed by a majority to be in the benefit of the party then the article is replaced out of group funds.

the only thing reading this thread has accomplished, is that it's made me pretty damn glad that i game with the people i do, because it could be a hell of a lot worse.
well, not the only thing... it also reinforces the idea that he majority of people who play paladins really don't know how to.

Moff, I just have to say that I admire your passion for the game. You remind me of myself when I was a young man in Jr. High/High School.

That said, from what I have read, I anticipate more problems from your DM regarding his frustration with your character build, which I think is really the essence of the issue here. If he is half the rat bastard DM that he could be, expect to be put in the position time and time again where your 36(whatever) AC will be nullified, either by further loss of equipment or by attacks that bypass it. What will you then? Have a plan.

Also, if I may offer some further advice: Effectively roleplaying a character that has different values/morals/sensibilities than your own can be extremely fun and rewarding. A paladin is a perfect opportunity for this, as almost nobody I know in real life could actually follow those limitations for long.

Finally, although the issue...umm... seems to be resolved, I personally side with the opinion that character equipment loss, breakage or final usage does not justify immediate compensation from gained party treasure. In most cases it does make sense for the party to equip each character as best suited to their strengths or party roles, and these things seem to work themselves out.

Cheers,
BFG

Some notes:
A tower shield can't be mithral because a tower shield is made of wood.
Races of Stone has stats for a steel tower shield, which then gives you the option making it from a different type of metal. (Same basic stats, 100lbs, reacts differently to spells like heat metal and warp wood)

+5 tower shield is Hardness 15, 70 hit points. This is one reason why sunder is a bit daft; if your enemy could deal out 70+ hit points of damage on a successful hit, wouldn't he be a LOT better served doing it to the PC? Plus, the enemy wants to loot that super-expensive shield! Smacks of BS/fiat.
Not always. Hitting you requires an attack roll vs. your AC. Hitting your shield requires an opposed attack roll, which a tower shield in particular gives a penalty to.

If I need a very high roll to hit you, I'm much better off using my first couple of attacks to sunder your shield.

Maybe I did behave like a paladin. If one of my party members suffered a great loss and was hurting, I would dig into my own pockets to bail him out. That is a very paladin way of acting is it not? Of course my paladin was naïve enough to believe that others were as kind hearted and caring as he was. And when he found that others did not share his compassion it came as a total shock to him. But now he has learned his lesson. He may be a kind and caring person but the rest of the world is not. Perhaps he needs to become a little bit more of a hard a$$ and stop caring so much about the welfare of others. If he is going to make it in a cutthroat world, he will have to toughen up a bit and stop being compassionate to a fault.

Not saying he should stop being lawful good of course. Just stop being so nice. Not giving any money to charity or church will leave him with a lot more to replace broken things.

When's the last time that happened?

Is your paladin in 9th grade? Is he reading The Catcher in the Rye and thinking, "Yeah, the world is full of phonies!"? Because calling everyone else greedy for not giving in to your own greedy demands is quite adolescent.

Don't worry, people fail all the time. It's nothing of which you should be ashamed. :)

You mean that he should stop behaving like a paladin? His god won't be happy about that, I'm sure. :D

Umm, wouldn't 18000 buy a +4 Steel Tower Shield? Is the +1 AC worth starting a war with your gaming group?

Yes, it bites taht it got destroyed, and I'm sure you can think of many things to do with the money, but you can nearly replace it as is.
