Who was right

Do you know why I'm defending my position on this so fervently? Because it happens all the time in my games. Things get broken; magic items, spell books, towers, etc. Everyone in my games has always said "Ow. That sucks, man." and moved on. Their replacement gear comes out of their pocket. What you do with your money is your business. If you want the party to chip in, each individual has the right to make up their own mind about it.

In response to Kalis' asserstion that we went after these guys for vengance. I must quote the great Frank Castle.

"This is not vengeance. Revenge is not a valid motive, it's an emotional response. No, not vengeance. Punishment"

The loot from the bad guys was 18,000 gold each. I might have been ok with the party only sacrificing 7,000 gold from the treasury to my cause. That still would have resulted in me getting 25,000 from the people who wronged me.
No, it would be 7000 gold from your party, and 18000 gold from your own pockets. The dead people owe you nothing. You brought the shield into combat without the means to keep it safe. It is entirely your own fault.

You are the one being greedy. Your arguments are so transparent, they might as well be glass. We can all see what lies beneath.

You mean Frank Castle, the evil psychopath? He is the person you are using as justification for your vengeance? The guy's no better than many he kills.

Don't kid yourself, your party saw it as a revenge trip.

I dont understand what you said Kalis. Is it what I said? 7,000 gold from the party and 18,000 form my own pocket. So we split up the 90,000 gold from the bad guys loot and each get 18,000. That is 18,000 of the 25,000 the bad guys owed me. Now I just need 7,000 gold from the share of the bad guys gold the party got. Thats 1,700 gold off the 18,000 that each of the other 4 party members got.

So the 90,000 gold is split like this. I get 25,000 and everyone else gets 16,300. Sounds reasonable to me. And I would have accepted that.

If I follow your assertion correction you state anything item that is sundered or unexpectedly destroyed in the process of adventuring should be replaced from party funds. Intentionally consumed items (e.g. arrows, potions, etc) would not be covered.

What I hear you saying is it would be a forgone conclusion that all characters would agree that replacement of sundered items would come out of the party treasury.

I assert that a character could agree or disagree with this. I also assert they would not be wrong to agree or disagree. It would just be a choice freely made. Might a ally want to make sure you had your shield? Sure. Might I want that second house, or a chance to feed the kids at the orphanage, or purchase something other that I believe would better benefit the party as a whole bit more than your shield? You bet.

Bottom line, I respectfully disagree it is a forgone conclusion.

This is completely off topic but what’s with all the Frank Castle hate? In the real world he would be the only hero who is actually doing any good.

Every time the joker escapes from Arkham asylum and goes on a killing spree, all those deaths are on Batman’s hands.

Most every super-villain has been captured at one time or another. So every death caused by every super-villain is the fault the hero who previously captured him but didn’t finish the job.

Its like those movies where some guy who went crazy and killed 20 people breaks out of the insane asylum and goes on another killing spree. I always wonder why after the opening of the film when he gets captured after his murderous rampage, they don’t just put a bullet in his head. That would stop the whole movie from happening and all those sexy sorority girls would go un-slaughtered.

Of course you would have, you greedily want more than your share. You want 7000 gold(split amongst all other members) from their shares just because your shield got busted. It isn't fair to anybody. It wouldn't be fair to your party because it is an equal share endeavor and wouldn't be fair to you because you didn't earn more than your fair share, you just had worse luck.

This is the crux of the argument. Tarkin is arguing for a different type of treasure split than the rest of the party was used to. Had this been brought up when the party was formed, I wouldn't be surprised if most party members agreed with it. However the fact that it is only being bought up now after Tarkin has lost something, it should come as no surprise that other players/characters are resistant to make a sudden change.

Summary: Sucks you to you right now, but no ex post facto changing of the treasure distribution. If you'd like to put forth a call for a new system for future treasure hauls, I'm sure the party would be willing to listen.

Respectfully Vaslov, a second house would be avarice, those hungry orphans don’t need food, after a few weeks they’ll be eating and gods table, and you would be hard pressed to find a better item to benefit the party and my shield which has held back the tide of Giants, Demons, Liches, Massive Constructs, Werewolves, and various other things that may have spelt doom for the party.
