Who were the Gith?

In my current campaign I am gearing up for a Mind Flayer invasion storyline. These horrid beasties will be comign from the stars as a fragment of their exploded world impacts with my game world. Part of what I was plannign is to have this group of Ilithids using Gith servitors.

From what I can tell, though, the Gith were not called such until after their revolt against the Mindflayers. My idea here is that these are Gith that remained loyal, but what were the Gith called before Gith led them to freedom?

I don't believe that's ever been revealed. In 1E and 2E, the proto-gith were supposed to be genetically modified humans, and in 3E they're apparently now supposed to have been merely humanlike. That's about all I can tell you about them.

I always thought they were enslaved humans or humanoid creatures dominated and used by the mind flayers for reproductive purposes. The mind flayers need a humanoid to be "born" from (don't ask). They may have been an Underdark race given that mind flayers prefer that most dark place.
