Dude, hold out until you get what works for you. I spent almost a solid 2 years of research before getting my system (and behaving financially). The time and effort paid off, big time.
This past weekend, I got the TV output to connect to my stereo receiver, so I could play Metroid Prime 2 and Resident Evil 4 in surround sound. Very Cool (and in the case of RE4, very creepy...).
The big decisions are all about what you want to watch, and what features matter the most to you. I wanted a TV with cablecard, for example, and that turned out to be a big deal, as I get the HDTV feeds for no extra money over cable, even without the cablecard...and since my tv has two tuners (but only one QAM tuner), I can leave the Tivo hooked up to the other channel feed. I also selected a TV that had an excellent reputation for it's 'stretch' modes of modifying 4:3 images to 16:9, since I knew I'd be watching a lot of 4:3 TV.
Animation, in particular, scales very well. We watched the pilot for Avatar: the Last Airbender last night, and there was very little artifacting.
