because a welsh accent is to hard to do
You're not kidding. :) I lived in England for a year. Developing a brummy (as they call Birmingham/Middlelands accents) was one thing. But developing a Welsh one?! No way. :p :)

I've always used a Scottish accent for dwarves, but not really the cultural elements. That's just always the accent that seemed like it would work the best for how I've always thought of their language. Lots of hard sounds - k, j, ch, z, v, etc. The Scottish accent lets you sound like that, so it's what I use.

Culturally, they're... hm. Not really analagous to any Earth culture. Angry, insular, clannish socialists.

Yosemite can't be German. His moustache is too long. His hair color is wrong. And he's short. Aryan race, my brownhole. No offense intended for such a "humble" culture. :p

:]

Maybe, but he looked pretty dashing in the spiked WW1 helmet. (and swearing in pseudo German while falling out of his Fokker.)

Blame Tolkien. ;)

Hobbits - English
Elves - Welsh
Dwarves - Scottish

Humans...um...humans...?

except that Galadriel and co hardly fit a welsh stereotype (the only welsh element being the longbows)

I never understood this. I didn't run across this idea, in fact, until I started visiting these boards. All my friends and I took to them as being Germanic/Norse, fitting as the area (WA state) was settled heavily by Scandinavians - hence the f***ton of last names ending in -son, -strom, and -ssen.

This is a really good question and it's something I've talked with my gaming group about more than once. In my D&D game, dwarves may be played this way but it's not mandatory. In my comic, I lose the accent because I don't think it reads very well in text alone.

Though isn't it easy to watch Braveheart and picture all the scots as angry dwarves and the english as snooty elves?
