Why are most dungeon entrances on the south?

The Temple of Elemental evil qualifies, IIRC.

The main door to the original Temple of Elemental Evil (T2) is on the south side. You enter most or all of the dungeon levels from the south side.

The South, in these ancient Chinese systems, is associated with the element Fire. Other associations include the planet Mars, over-excitement, bitter taste, sheep/goats, and the middle finger.

So, by placing his dungeon entrance on the south, the Evil Necromancer is, effectively, saying he's a passionately bitter, warlike dude making a rude hand gesture at the entire world! Sounds about right.

The goats... well, the minions need something to eat, right?

It definitely seems like the majority of classic dungeons have entrances on the south side, much more than the one-quarter you would expect if it was chosen at random. Why do you think that is?

Heck man, got any ideas how much it costs in wood to warm a good-sized dungeon in winter ? need some south wind down there.

Plus cutting trees annoy elves, and they are so agressive with their magic. :D
