Interesting. The question is, how much did (A)D&D Designers know about these books 
I remember a German Roleplaying Game (actually, the most common played here. Much more common than even Shadowrun or D&D) "Das Schwarze Auge". They are going to publish an English version of it ("The Black Eye". I wonder if this is a good marketing name, but we`ll see
. ) There were also some computergames of the setting, I believe they were called "Realms of Arkania" or something like that. (Never played them...)
The whole setting is based on a Dere (If you change the word a bit, you can create the name "Erde", which is the German Expression for Earth), especially one continent, "Aventurien".
On this continent, there do live orcs. They were the original race there, as far as I know, but than human (and maybe elves) arrived there and conquered the world. The Orcs are considered evil, though they probably only fight for their own lands.
