Why are ranks limited?

Disable Device is trained only... if you didn't have a single rank in it, you shouldn't have been trying in the first place...

This is why I like fighter/paladin types. If you don't know how to dissable the trap on a chest, whack it with your sword.

Then agian, the first PC I saw do this was actually a BBN. And he was using an axe. ;)

Barbarians have such a great spell list!

Inflict Moderate Wounds. Barbarian Focus: A big axe.
Cause Fear. Barbarian Focus: A big axe.
Knock. Barbarian Focus: A big axe.
Suggestion. Barbarian Focus: A big axe.
Disintegrate. Barbarian Focus: A big hammer.
Levitate. Target: Creature touched.
Sleep. Target: Creature touched.
Stinking Cloud. Barbarian Material Component: A bowl of chili, consumed at time of preparation.
Repulsion. Barbarian Material Component: A bowl of chili, consumed at time of preparation.
Find Traps. Barbarian Material Component: A halfling on a 10 foot pole.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. I wish I didn't always run into the RoFL comments while at work. It's so embarrassing.

And I hope you don't mind if I snip that away for my group. Postarity you know. ;)

Its because having the skill cap allows a DM to create an adventure with skill based obstacles that are appropriate to the level of the players.

If you remove this cap, the problem isnt about having 1 stat with all the points. Its about having 3 stats with all the points. At 44 points, you can have +15/+15/+14 to three stats. Add in a modest ability adjustment, and you have a skill god.

A theif with those kind of ranks in Open Lock, Disable Device, and Search will never worry about getting nailed by a trap. Writing an adventure with that kind of Super theif in the party is difficult. Of course, you could just jack up the DC of the traps and locks to balance that. But not every player will max those particular skills.

Putting the skill cap in forces characters to be a bit more balanced, and makes them more managable to DM for.

Our gaming group recently went back to playing Rolemaster for a change of pace..... and yes pace is definitely the operative word. ;) We will likely resume playing D&D soon but the one great benefit of rolemaster that we will really find lacking is the depth of detail on your character - mechanics wise. A first level rolemaster character seems so much better fleshed out than a D&D equivalent. There is also more scope for specialisation in RM but it doesn't seem to break the game balance.

I'm considering keeping a cap on skills but maybe upping it a tad. At present, a first level rogue for example has enough skill points to put three or four points into a broad smattering of skills which results in a certain level of uniformity in characters. Now I realise that there are enough skills in D&D that there is scope for taking fairly differnt skill sets and also having different character backgrounds, but personally I like to be able to see the differences when looking at the character sheet. Perhaps a maximum of eight points in a skill on first level and those points beyond the first four cost double?

I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions as our group will probably look at making some sort of decision on this next time we play.

What's the max rank / skill point cost when he levels up?

What about cross-class skills?
