Why are the Book of Fiends and the CBoEM listed as special order on Amazon

That's odd.

Book of Fiends WAS discounted 30% just a few days ago, because I'd been considering buying it through Amazon and had looked it up. I'm not sure what the pub status was listed as at the time.

"Special order" usually just means Amazon doesn't have a copy currently in their warehouse and would have to go back to the distributor/publisher to see if they still had copies available (which obviously they would on a new book like this). I don't know if that usually affects the discount or not.

What does that status mean? ("Special Order")

Is that the reason that Amazon's usual discount isn't in effect for those items?

Amazon's ways are always a mystery. Sometimes they discount our books, sometimes they don't. Special Order likely means "we sold out of what we had in stock". The boggling part is this:

<<These hard-to-find titles are not discounted and are subject to an additional charge of $1.99 per book due to the extra cost of ordering them.>>

Hard to find? The book's been out a month, it's definitely in-stock, and Amazon pulls our stuff through Ingram and can order more at any time.

I'd wait a few days. I bet they are just waiting for a restock and this is boilerplate language for such cases.

I ordered mine through Wal Mart, got the 37% discount, and shipping, comined with the other 5 books i got, was $3.78 for snail mail. It will be here no later than March 10th. Should be here today since i reeived the "it has shipped" notice two days ago. The other GR book i ordered was Fang and Fury.

Similar problem with B&N

I work part-time at the local Barnes & Noble because I have addiction for 30% off books. I ordered 5 copies of CBoEM as late Christmas gifts for my players and me since we are about to start a new Arcana Unearthed campaign. A few days ago I get a call the at the order was "cancelled by the publisher." Huh?!

I posted on Monte's boards wondering if they had already sold out. He said he didn't think so, but would check on it. At the time I looked at Amazon, the hated enemy of B&N, and they had it at 30%. With free shipping over $50 it was the same deal I got from work, but I resisted. And now they're special orders, so no discount and may have extra charge of $1.99?!! It's enough to make me go back to the local gaming store that takes 6-8 weeks to order something if he remebers... ;)

I preordered my copy of BoF from Amazon and it arrived Wed. I got it for the $25 price too. I also suspect they might have it out of stock at the moment.

I just checked Barnes & Nobles, Book of Fiends is available for $27 w/ free shipping.

Best,
Robert Schwalb

Primary reason Amazon and Barnes and Nobles are having difficulty with the book is that the wholesalers (i.e., Ingram and Baker and Taylor) are short on supply... This will change as they have placed restocks and should have the books shortly. Then the situation with Amazon.com, B&N and bn.com should correct itself.
