Why are you looking forward (or not looking forward) to Eberron?

This has probably been asked before, so sorry for bringing this up again. :)

I have been hearing a few tidbits of info about Eberron from this site and whatever I happen to see on the WotC site.

However, I am still undecided as to whether or not I want to take a look at this setting. While it seems interesting, I'm not sure if the flavor of Eberron will fit my taste or whether or not I will like the mechanics.

Well, in regards to mechanics, I'm a WotC slaveboy, whatever they come out in terms of mechanics I'm all for, heh. :)

So why are you looking forward or not looking forward to Eberron?

I am mainly looking forward to it from a campaign idea point of view. I hate the tendency of filling up books with Prestige Classes, Feats and all that crap which to MnsHO simply detracts from the imagination of the players. (/rant on: why should EVERYTHING have to be coverd by rules and number, can't people just make things up, the DM makes a judgement call and move along?? /rant off)

Eberron seems to have a lot of ideas that are WAY different from most other products I have seen out there so far and personally I like the steampunk genre (I thought the Sorcery & Steam supplement by FFG but meagerly interesting in terms of value for money).

I'm looking foward to an integrated world, new ideas, some new mechanics, a great springboard for new adventures.

I wasn't really interested until the previews started appearing, but they portray the kind of world that I'd like to adventure in and run adventures in.

Cheers

I am not looking forward to it. The setting is not different enough. Magipunk with dinosaurs does not seem like a world that would be fun to game within. If they had steam tech, then maybe it would be better, but this world just feels like another FR, just advanced a few hundred years.

I wanted something exciting, new and fresh.

Eberron ain't it.

Well, its a good job that doesn't define Eberron then, isn't it? Dinosaurs exist in the standard D&D rule books, and in standard D&D can turn up anywhere as random encounters. At least in Eberron they are geographically located and can be completely ignored if you don't like dinosaurs (but I didn't notice you complain at the dinosaurs in the MM, for instance).

Magipunk? Where on earth do you get that idea? It is supposed to be a noir-ish setting, quite a different kettle of fish. The fact that it has a stab at societies to which low level magic is commonly available automatically makes it very different from almost all other campaign settings I can think of. FR has lots of magic but somehow assumes that it doesn't really get used in society.

Why not dismiss it for reasons based on fact rather than just trash-talk it?

Just curious.

I propose that the admins should do a global search-and-replace for magipunk, dungeonpunk, and other variations on the theme X-punk, replacing "punk" with some other appelation. It really doesn't matter what, because it wouldn't alter the semantic and substantive content of these labels at all. As long as it's distinctive and facilitates searches at a later date, all is well.

I propose "-hong". Who's with me?

Hong "baddest dungeonhong lover on EN World" Ooi

As far as I have heard, Eberron will be somehow similar to Arcadia in one of our campaigns. I look forward to capture tidbits and ideas from this setting as I hear them around (e.g. today's cosmology articles features a nice idea to try out about waxing/waning planes of existance), but I wouldn't need another whole setting to use in its entirety. Not that it would be bad at all, but at the same time it wouldn't be better than Forgotten Realms or Midnight or Planescape.

Hmmm. I don't know about the dino/steam combo. Read only one ref about the dino stuff, all detailed info seen so far looks pretty interesting and I have yet to encounter a dino, but anyhoo, some of us live in free countries and can do as we please.... ;)

I personally liked the short (ten page or so) graphic intro and so far the details on the WotC site almost all contain inklings of neat ideas and thoughts that would be very usable in any campaign setting (I do not use any standard setting, always homebrew but for the sake of saving time and player recognition spike the mix with large parts borrowed from the well known campaign settings such as FR and GH)

I CAN fully imagine though that one does not look forward to it as a setting to use in its entirety. Whether Eberron contains enuff food for thought to be good value for money is my greatest concern.

Sorry. We would, but we already have plans to use "Hong" in the profanity filter. I'm not so sure we can change at this late date.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Eberron. I think I'd be more interested in playing in the world instead of running it.

Earthdawn - yep, that is the reason I am looking forward to it, there is something, maybe art, maybe style, maybe my inner child, but I see Earthdawn in Eberron.
