I was my first RPG in 1980. Played all editions. I only play it solo now when I'm nostalgic about previous editions, TSR and WoTC alike. I also play 5.5 solo to see how different it is from 5e.

My wife retires in three months. She played from 2e to 5e with my group but stopped in 2014. We've talked about doing a weekly GM + one-player campaign. We might do D&D 5.5, but currently, I'm leaning more toward Dragonbane.

The same reason I sometimes play Monopoly: I enjoy the game, even if it's not the only one I play.

In 2025, we're finally getting serious about playing a 5E Radiant Citadel campaign on alternate months, but that'll be interspersed with Shadowdark, Pirate Borg, Mothership and maybe Eat the Reich during spooky season.

I wouldn't want to play one RPG for the rest of my life any more than I'd want to just play one board game or eat one meal, although no judgement of those who feel otherwise. (I had a manager who ate the same meal from Subway every weekday for 15 years and he was quite happy to do so.)

I would have picked the first three options if I could; I selected 1 and 3. D&D has a certain nostalgia for me, as I started playing with the Basic Set in the early 1980s. I played a lot AD&D and a bit of 3e, then skipped 4e entirely (though I do have the core rulebooks). When I came back into the hobby with 5e it was the most popular TTRPG around and very easy to find new players. When I was younger I would familiarize myself with multiple systems simultaneously but I'm getting to the age where it's easier for me just to stick with one game. Even the shift from 2014 to 2024 rules is requiring some adjustment, as I'm currently running two games with the former and one with the latter.

You know, I thought of that right after I posted it. Hmm...I guess 5/5.5?
I play a couple versions of 5e, but not 5.5. Mostly because my players know and prefer it. To that end I found the version of 5e that best suits my preferences (Level Up) and further modified it. I run a game for my kids that just uses standard WotC 2014 D&D on the PC side because I don't want to overwhelm them.

Convenience. It's what my players know. If I could find an AD&D group, I would be there instead. Or find a group to play our homebrew... then we'd try that.

If I were to dust off the old dice, Dragonbane might be the game I played (or maybe Shadowdark).
