Why did TSR release Basic D&D?

T Foster gives a lot of good information in his post (most of which jibes with what I've heard & read). I will clarify my point earlier about B/X D&D being me flexible. While there was a great deal of AD&D "rules experimentation" done by TSR, in the Basic/Expert games, a lot of DMs were able to take advantage of the simpler ruleset and homebrew rules to suit their campaigns without contradicting something in the books. Not everyone's cup of tea, but a big plus to some people. :)

BTW, Plane Sailing, I highly recommend picking up a used copy of the Moldvay Basic rules (you can usually find one for $5-10 online), even if just to thumb through. Moldvay/Cook (Expert) are the only D&D books I still use.
