Then why are your replies so stereotyped? ;) Sorry, couldn't resist.

Yes, I think after so many similar posts at the very least he should change his sig.

As for the poll, what about an option for those of us who only ever DM... like me? I like the creative outlet although my RP skills are crappy; it's the development of plots etc... that I most enjoy and watching the players unravel them.

You could always add him to your ignore list as I have done after tiring of his act... Who really cares what version you play as long as you have fun... no one is wrong or right... No version is "better" than another... Its a game... have fun... oh well...

As for the poll... I voted for storytelling and tactican... The fun I get from the game comes from sharing the story/world I've created with my friends for a few hours on Saturday... I also enjoy seeing them come up with these elaborate plans that are doomed to fail :D

Btw, I chose the first four options (whew, at least I remained on topic for some degree this time around...).

Oh, I'd never do that. Diaglo's funny. Especially if he starts talking about stereotypes :)

I voted everything except Power Gamer and Method Actor. I get a kick out of exploring the DM's world; I like solving problems; I like mixing it up in combat; and I like the pretty pictures that appear in my head when I'm playing. :D

I'm pretty much a specialist method actor tactician, since I rarely play and when I do I tend to let the rest of the players pick whatever they want and then fill in the gaps. During combat half the time I feel like I'm teaching the group the sort of tactics and tricks of the trade that I'm normally using to kick their butts from the other side, and out of combat I finally get to roleplay a character for more than the space of breaths it takes for the players to bore themselves chatting with them. It would all be allowable if I didn't automatically start center-staging myself all the time, but I do so that's why I carefully don't allow myself to be a player too often. *sigh*

that's not Robin's definition of a "specialist."

a "specialist" is someone who always, always plays the same type of character.

for example: in a modern day scenario, he plays a ninja. in a sci fi game, he's playing the stealthy intrusion cyborg. in a fantasy game, he's playing the assassin-rogue with mystical abilities. in a superhero game, he's playing a super-ninja. in a Western game, he asks if he can play a ninja who's migrated over from Japan.

or the guy who always plays honorable, law-abiding, dispensers of justice, regardless of campaign or scenario.

or the girl who always plays cat-beings.

that's what he means by a "specialist."

I chose butt-kicker (though more often than not I'm on the receiving end :p ) and casual gamer. The butt-kicker part of me provides stress relief and is why Quake 3 will forever remain on my computer. The casual gamer side of me is the main reason I like boardgames, pnp games, and minis games.

There's another part of me that just plain likes rules-sets...there are a lot of games I own that I don't play often (I like to find used games at thrift stores and used book stores), but that I like to occasionally read through and get a feel for how the rules work and how well they accomplish what I think the designer might have intended. I think it's the designer side of me trying to deconstruct stuff to see what made it tick and how it goes together.

I based my answer off of the poll, which defined a specialist as someone who fills a role. I tend to fill the role of the missing options, the least picked options, the pick-up character. In a sense I fill even your different definition, when I play I AM the tactician and that's usually my most important role - fitting that into the immersive roleplaying experience and whatever clunky character concept I'm pigeonholed into by the character choices of the rest of the group is something that always happens. In any case arguing definitions is basically just dumb, especially in polls on ENWorld.

I like swashing my buckler, etc.

I love a good story, well told, with fun characterizations. Rules minutiae, especially in combat, I find incredibly dull and pass it over whenever it is plausible.

Get into character

Act like a hero

Make sure they speak your name later

That makes for a good game
