Why do YOU hate specialization?

Why do you hate specialization

Well? I hate the prohibited schools, the fact that you don't really get better with your specialist school(s, if changeling), and the fact that the warmage, beguiler, and dread necromancer can perform their specialization better.

i don't hate specialization at all. choose divination and you only have to choose one prohibited school!

specialization rocks!!

messy

I hate the specialization rules because they have no real "feel" to them. In 2nd ed each type of specialist got something special.

In 3.5 - you get an extra spell per spell level to cast and a +2 on Spellcraft checks for your specialty school. And if a specialist one of the 2 spells learned per level must be in the specialist school.

Spells Gained at a New Level: Wizards perform a certain amount of spell research between adventures. Each time a character attains a new wizard level, she gains two spells of her choice to add to her spellbook. The two free spells must be of spell levels she can cast. If she has chosen to specialize in a school of magic, one of the two free spells must be from her specialty school.

I could see if she gained an extra spell per level in her specialist school but not the way its currently written.

As a natural born munchkin, I hate prohibited schools. But I'd rather be forced to specialize than to play a boring carbon-copy generalist Wizard twice in a row. :)

Actually, I like specialization. Trading out two schools is still worth it for the extra spell slot, IMO, and I also like diviners from a flavor perspective, which means only losing the one school. But I agree that specialists don't get enough variation in the core rules, which is why I allow usage of the UA specialization rules when I DM.

I think specialization is an excellent example of a very well balanced option for casters while still keeping full spellcasting progression, compared to the complaint levied against PrCs which grant benefits at no cost (O NO, FAMILIAR!).

Combining Unearthed Arcana and Complete Mage can give you some pretty cool specialists who are truly better with their specialization than others. With just the PHB they are fairly lame.

Plus the PHB2 has some alternate options for wizard specialists.
