Why Do You Play Roleplaying Games Redux

I play RPGs for the...

It's a Fun way to spend your free time, while Socializing with your friends. Also, roleplaying inspires Creativity, and there's a feeling of Adventure. It's better than reading a book or watching a movie, because of the social and creative aspects, and because of the Interaction (<- this keyword is missing in the poll; meaning that your actions have an effect on the environment, as much as the environment has an effect on the participants; they interact) inherent to roleplaying games; it's not just a predetermined script you run through, but rather a 'living' environment. It's 'real' in some sense of the word (not in all, obviously).

Sense of Wonder is also missing, I think. :)

I don't understand "Edge Over Others", what do you mean by that?

Other than that, looking at the poll's results, my interpretation is that players are not that much interested in the setting's cultures, environments, and history, so these don't need to be emphasized and detailed at length. Also, this poll lets me think that most players should be okay for a campaign with few magical items.

Winning? Being better at something than someone else? Any other form of generic ego-stroking that one can accomplish in a game?

While I do enjoy winning, I'm usually the DM, whose job it is to lose (gracefully) and then give out prizes....

Wow, are you on the wrong board!

I love the action, acting/roleplaying/whatever (it's all the same to me), combat, legends and myths and miniatures. I credit miniatures are being my 'gateway' drug into RPGs as I had a dozen or so before I ever cracked open my first D&D book.

See my previous answer ;)

Essentially, rpgs allow me to bring in my wide-ranging interests from the "real world" into a convenient hobby!
