Why doesn't Spycraft use d20 Modern Rules

I think that previously, because Spycraft used WP/VP, they had to go full d20 STL. Now that UA has released WP/VP as open content and the fact that Spycraft has become a brand in its own right (SG-1 is Powered by Spycraft) that it starts to make more sense to produce a full OGL version.

Actually, reading the credits in the core book, the VP system was separately licensed, and I believe it had little to do with the licensing of the book by the d20 STL. I still wonder if Spycraft would truly benefit as a solely OGL product, because I don't know if it would be popular enough even now to survive without the compatibility of the license.

lack of a d20 license doesn't seem to have hurt Mutants & Masterminds or Arcana Unearthed sales.

Spycraft has been out for almost two years now with an established fan base and a large line of books. if their next edition lacks the d20 license, i doubt the average consumer would even notice. it seems to me the game has already earned its place on the shelf at the FLGS.

(i'm saying this, and i don't even like Spycraft...)

You got the inside source on that?

No, just speculation, although in the back of my mind I vaguely remember when the whole d20 thing kicked off there was some discussion about making a core rule OGL rule book (then called Cloak & Dagger IIRC) with supporting books being d20. Also the question is Would WoTC have licensed VP/WP to a product that was not going to boost core rulebook sales?

They would on the condition that they agree to a royalty payment. ;) (I'm just guessing, but anyone with a Hutt or Ferengi business mindset would not pass up such an opportunity.)

So AEG decided it's better to make it d20.

Actually, I think SweeneyTodd is closer to the mark that they are 2 seperate licenses. UA's WP/VP system works a good bit differently than ours, as WotC made some significant but subtle changes to the published version. I also agree with comments that the Spycraft brand is plenty strong to survive being OGL. It hasn't hurt Conan's sales either, it appears (now in a 2nd printing)...

Are you hinting the next edition of Spycraft Espionage Handbook will be strictly OGL?

No, because I don't actually know. I'm just stating my belief that the brand is strong enough and the system is sufficiently departed from SRD-based d20 that it doesn't need a d20 logo to sell well
