Why I don't like Bodaks...

I love Bodaks! Very old-school. Monte Cook's "Fane of the Demon God" had a room with a dozen Bodaks in it at once! Great fun. Death-death-death-death-death-death-death. :)

The only thing amusing to me about bodaks is the power of a lone bodak to completely hose over a cavalry charge. The 16th level fighter/paladin/cavalier sets his lance and charges, laughs off the gaze attack with his +23 Fort save, and then remembers that his horse is only +6. Oops.

A paladin's mount gets Share Saving Throws right off the bat, so it's just as safe as the paladin is.

Normal horse, though? Hosed.

Edit: Oh ho, never mind. Yeah. Paladin's mount goes down hard. Doesn't benefit from Divine Grace or any other modifiers to saves.. just the base save. Wow, that kinda sucks.

Sometimes characters die.

There is no risk if character's can't die, and if there is no risk the game is not as fun, IMHO.

Now, you shouldn't just put Bodak's around willy nilly; there should usually be some sort of warning so the PCs can weight the risk. But if they choose to confront it let the chips lie where they fall.
