Why I Hate Coca Cola

prepare for ranting

Ok, some things need to be cleared up here:

1) Vanilla Coke is a travesty against man. I have spoken out on this serious issue before, where I was advice to seek out a real vanilla coke (freshly mixed). That, of course, I have not done. Because Vanilla Coke is a travesty against man.

2) Root Beer.... now don't get me started (oh wait, you did). Root Beer is also a travesty against man. It has the looks of Coke (warning sign #1), but the taste of Listerine mixed with too much sugar. I was adviced to seek out some other brands, like AW, which of course I didn't do either. Because Root Beer is a travesty against man.

Let the flames begin.

You know, it warms my heart to see so many people who DON'T drink much carbonated stuff in this thread. I don't drink Coke, Pepsi, or any of their offspring. Not for any great health reason, although I'm pleased to reap the benefits. I just hate the taste.

I'll have the occasional root beer now and then, but even that no longer really does it for me. About the only carbonated drink I will actually choose to drink is the apple cider that they use in place of champagne for people who don't drink -- Martinelli's Apple Cider is good when I'm around a bunch of people having wine or champagne, for instance.

There will be no flames from me. I just disagree with you on the Root Beer thing and think you are simply being silly with the rest. :p A&W Root Beer is tasty even though I don't drink soda anymore. Vanilla Coke however leaves much to be desired.

Tell me about it. Why is this so?

Referring (I presume) to Diet Coke increasing the mass of your teeth... that's scary, because you'd think an acidic substance would do the opposite. But no, when your teeth are the size of walnuts and solid brown, don't come crying to me.

Actual mass increase may be exaggerated.

Back in 1997, I was part of a group doing research on soft drinks. Our findings were fairly interesting (we didn't survey all the drinks out there, perhaps because some weren't readily available in New Zealand at the time).

Investigating the corrosive properties of various soft drinks, Coca Cola was actually fairly mild. If you see Fanta, run the other way - it dissolved calcium structures (simulated teeth) several times faster than Coke. Diet Coke, on the other hand, actually increased the mass of the calcium structures. That was rather scary. If you drink a bottle of Fanta every day for the rest of your life, be aware that you'll lose 10% of your tooth mass not to decay, but to acid. Decay is simply an extra layer on top of that.

And when you drink a Coke, do you routinely hold it in your mouth overnight? According to my dentist, you're more likely to ruin your teeth by eating something like bread (which can stick to your teeth for hours and coat them with startchy goodness) than soda (which only touches your teeth for a brief moment, and even then is buffered by saliva). As for acid, sodas are no more acidic than orange juice - am I to stop drinking that as well?

The sugar and caffine aren't too good for teeth either. :p When I was having dental problem I was told by the dentist to stop drinking soda amongst other sugary things. I guess there are differing opinions on it in the dental community. ;)
