Why I hate Point-Buy (and D&D 3.0 and beyond)!

You're not alone. I'm just as obsessive-compulsive as you are. Point buy is a min/maxers nightmare.

I created a handy Excel file that automatically derives final scores based on how many points you spend. It even looks up and includes racial modifiers, and gives you your starting skill points based on class, Int bonus, and race bonus (if human). I can email it to you if you want--it saves loads of time.

-z, spending way too much time obsessing over his own backup character for Living Greyhawk.

You can also send me a copy if you can thanks.

Although I don't see these as being a concern with a point buy vs. roll it up kind of system.
Perhaps I am still missing the point. If so-sorry!:D

Yes, although don't worry about it. Meepo got it right on. It's not that I don't like point buy, I do, it's that it allows me to PRE-make characters, which for me means creating them again and again. Every movie, book or idea sparks a new character, which I feel a need to fully create. Under a rolled system that was not possible. The addition of so many variables (feats, skills, PrCs) exacerbates this since there are now so many combinations and I go through them all to make sure I have my character fit my concept. I am bemoaning the fact that I CAN do this now, I like it, I love it, it just takes so much of my time now.

At least I know I am not alone;)

Sorry, I really do actually like point-buy and the 3.0 and beyond systems, but does anyone else have this problem. I mean I knew, knew the basic concept I wanted but went through at least 50 different ways of getting there between stats and class combos. It drove me mad, until I nailed it. I am alone in this?

This is one of my problems with point buy. I have seen players spend crazy long times juggling points when we could have been gaming. I think either standard array or rolled is better. You can still pick you emphasis, but it's not so niggly.

Since when did players become so attached to their PCs? People have them all mapped out so they can get the 3 PrCs that they want before 15th level so they can make sure to have the maximum whatever....ugh!

I will still use point buy however, as players that do like to max out their PCs can do so and know that from the beginning they are the same as everyone else. And I hate when they complain because they only have one stat above 12 and have an inferiority complex for the entire campaign.

One of my friends has this problem to an extreme level. He used to make scads of characters for Champions and with all of the options in 3.0 and the d20 legions of books, he makes characters of all levels and types and races and feats and spells and items and and and and and and....

Guy will make a character and plot out his whole career from 1st-20th level only to revise it when a new book comes out.

He is not only a min-maxer, but a good role player so he's often willing to sacrifice something in order to augment the role playing potential. A real good guy over round that most other players consult for advice and information on making their characters.

My DM forces point-buy. This is becuse in one of our first campaigns I made a paladin and roled(no reroles) four 18s a 17 and a 16 (and since we started at fourth level I upped the 16 to a 17) FRom that point on we have alwas used point-buy
