D&D 5E Why I Think D&DN is In Trouble

The Astral Sea was indeed so much better of an idea, and I hope D&DN keeps it.

I also agree! I would love to see the Astral Sea retained. So much more exiting than an infinite plane of grayness. It can also work with the great wheel since the wheel is more symbolic than a rigid structure. I think a rebooted SpellJammer campaign based on the Astral Sea could even be a fun and workable setting.

I suppose my point is DDN seems to be the best game, for various reasons, to bring new players into the hobby. If it fails, I don't think that bodes well for the hobby in general.
There will always be table-top RPG's. The worst that can happen is it reverts to throwback ultra-niche entertainment like interactive fiction text games* or something.

*Which are still totally awesome, BTW. Even if everyone probably forgot they even existed.

I don't know how to do that!

You wanna dance? Let's dance..."put on your red shoes and dance the blues..."

Can you support your claim it is a "profusion" of people?

I cannot. All I have, poor me, is the months and months and months of reading posts placed her that reiterate what I've said...over and over and over. That, to me, warrants the term "profusion." That you are incapable of noticing patterns is not my problem..

I think it's a rather small number of people, relative to the marketplace.

You, as usual, are welcome to "think" whatever you like.

Profusion suggests "an abundance or large quantity" of people that have that view, and I just don't see it as being that.

Yes. Yes it does. You are welcome to have that opinion.

You physically cannot prove it impossible,

Nope. No, I can't. Particularly since I have the upper body strength of a ringtailed lemur, no...I can not "physically" prove it to be impossible.

The basis of your conclusion seems to contain serious doubts about both planks that form that conclusion. So, I'd say there is doubt.
Bully!

So, because 5E is never going to get every single gamer to play it, it's doomed to failure?

"Every single gamer"...no. I didn't say that. Every D&D player? Yeah, probably.

Please. There were lots of people who never made the jump from AD&D to 3E, does that mean 3E was a failure?

And that somehow translates to what people are or will be doing for 5e how

?If 5E gets most 4E players and a large chunk of Pathfinder players on board--or vice versa--it will be fine.

LOLOLOLOLAHHHAHHHAHHH....Oh?! You're serious? What makes you think "most 4e players and a large chunk of Pathfinder players" are "on board??" What info do you have that the rest of us do not? Cuz, from what I've seen and read...it's a big ole "eh" for pretty much everyone, if not a "no way no how" form, especially, 4e and PF players.

And despite people asserting otherwise, I've yet to see any hard data indicating that 4E players will not switch.

You mean the "hard data" that says 4e players LIKE 4e?! Why are they going to switch from a game they LIKE!?!

All I've seen are anecdotes, and my anecdotes say 4E players are gung-ho for Next.
Enjoy your anecdotes...no need to look at anything else...enjoy! Have fun! You're totally correct. [/delusion]

Another anecdote:

My 10-year-old son wants to start gaming in earnest with dad and his friends (we are playing the D&D Next playtest rules currently). I told him to wait till summer when D&DN comes out 'for real', so he can read about the races and classes and finally make his own character. The ponderous Pathfinder Core rulebook would bake the brain of a 10 year old I think. D&DN seems a much easier game for a younger gamer to learn and play.

My 8-12-year-old nieces and nephews got PF just fine, seeing how there is a good enough translation if English is still above them. They don't have to read the whole book after all.
