Why I WON'T boycott WotC

I won't be bycotting DnD either. I've been playing the game for a little over 16 years and it is still my favorite way to have fun and bond with friends. I've already even set up my purchases for May which include Complete Champion, Complete Scoundrel, Drow of the Underdark and Dungeonscape.

I'm happy that WotC hasn't lost their touch to produce creative works. I am disappointed by Dungeon & Dragon going totally digital, and am not sure wheteher or not I'll support it. In the mean time, I'll be enjoying my remaining issues to both of my subscriptions and when they run out, Pathfinder.

I used to read Pyramid, but once it dissapeared from shelves to the electonic world, I dropped it.

If WotC does indeed pull the plug on Dragon & Dungeon, I'll not subscribe to their electronic replacement.

However, I will NOT boycott WotC.

OTOH, if they (or any other game company) decide to make future editions of their games available only online, I'll not purchase that either.

E-stuff is a supplement to my reality, not a replacement.

Count me in this group. While I'll miss the mags like everyone else, I *like* the direction WotC is taking with this digital initiative....it should make the game easier to play without dumbing it down. I'm talking character gen, virtual table top, combat tracking, etc. I'm tired of flipping through 15 hardbacks just to put a character together.

I just ordered three books yesterday: Waterdeep, Explorer's Handbook, and Magic of Eberron.

D&D has been my favorite hobby for most of my adult life; I can't just suddenly stop liking it because two magazines went away.

I'm saddened by the loss of Dragon and Dungeon, but boycott? Nope.

They still make products I want to buy.

Besides, Dragon has been silenced before and returned (around 1997), so who knows?

I think the decision WotC made was misguided, but it doesn't really affect me, personally, and won't change my buying habits. The last WotC book I purchased was Red Hand of Doom, and I think the one before that was Book of Vile Darkness. WotC simply doesn't offer much that I'm interested in, so I haven't bought much from them in a long time. Same goes for Dragon and Dungeon. They just weren't to my taste -- especially Dragon. People are talking about the end of an era, but I mourned Dragon's "death" a long time ago, when I found it was no longer useful or interesting to me. I have no interest (or confidence) in the WotC online venture, so I don't expect things to change, there. No boycott, just no interest.

However, Paizo just may have some products in the works that I'll be buying. I'm not that enthused about Pathfinder; I'm not a fan of the whole Adventure Path thing. However, that's not all they're doing. Their Planet Stories line of fiction is right up my alley, and Erik Mona mentioned that adventures in the same vein (classic swords-n-sorcery action/art/etc) will happen, soon. I'd also be interested in the book of compiled stand-alone adventures that Erik mentioned he is considering. Lastly, I'm very interested in Paizo's partnership with Necromancer Games. (The RPG companies that have been getting my money are Troll Lord, Necromancer, and Goodman, for the most part.)

I am sad to see Dungeon/Dragon go. I never bought Dragon. I bought Dungoen however. I have to say that the STAP didn't impress me as much. Also while the AoW was a good story, it was weak a bit in design. I'm gonna hold off on Pathfinder (is that the name?) and see what others say before rushing in.

However I think it's silly the WotC hate that has been going on around here, espically since we don't know fully what WotC has planned. At least wait until we know what they got going on to replace the magazines before you boycott/hate them to death.

But as always poeple (myself included) tend to react rather than wait and see.

I'm not going to boycott them because they're completely within their rights to do what ever the hell they like with their magazines.

Would this suck for the Paizo people? Sure, but they already got a bit more than the licence permitted and must have known this was coming for a while.

Boycott is such a strong word, and I think faintly ridiculous in this context.

I will continue to buy the WOTC books I like, and skip the ones I don't, and I see no real change. As for the magazines, I will not miss Dragon, as it rarely had anything of value, and will only miss Dungeon a bit (I subscribed to it this year for the first tie in a decade or more.)

Especially with WOTC putting out excellent adventures (Red Hand and the Expedition series) I find even less use for it. As for online content, I have only bought one pdf in my life (the top levels or Rappan Athuk) and doubt I will buy another. I like paper, plain and simple.

Which means I will most definitely not do their online content, but am content to wiat and see
