D&D 4E Why is this board so down on 4E critics?

No, it can be pretty rude. It's also a fairly common practice on the net, but it's not one that we really encourage here.
Wait; are you saying that the example in question was rude, or that hypothetically a FIFY could be rude, or that the concept of FIFYing in and of itself is rude?

I'm not arguing with the middle one there (well, I'm not really arguing at all) but I certainly disagree with both the first and the third statements. FIFY is not a blanket rude practice, and the example was one of somewhat rueful and humorous agreement by expanding the statement; I honestly fail to see how anyone could see that as rude either.

Very simple, Hobo - humor is in the eye of the beholder. Just 'cause you think it is funny, doesn't mean the other guy doesn't think it is rude.

Historically, on these boards, the primary use of FIFY has been sarcastic - and sarcasm generally fails to win friends and influence people. Used often enough in that fashion, the entire method gets tainted in the eyes of the audience, such that the general expectation is that you are attempting to be rude.

Consider it to be going the way of the rolleyes smiley - not quite there, but heading in that direction.

Think of the stereotypical player of WoW. That is why it is used as an insult.

When someone uses "They are making it like WoW" as an insult, it is generally used to mean that they are marketing it (4E) towards teenagers who are only interested in killing things and getting "phat loot!!" and have no interest at all in roleplaying. They need to be spoon-fed quests and can only work on a railroad.
That might be the stereotype, but of course like most stereotypes it's complete crap - considering that the average World of Warcraft subscriber is in their late twenties, for one thing.

I'm thus far unsold on 4e and have seen many things in it that I'd prefer were done differently and-or not at all, and have voiced such repeatedly (and thus far, without bannings or even any red letters); but one thing you'll never find me doing is comparing it to World of Warcraft.

Why? Mainly because my experience with World of Warcraft has been close enough to zero that I wouldn't recognize the game if it walked up and hit me. :)

So you're presenting second-hand news as fact. Then you go on to attack the company that owns the game this entire website is all about. It would be like going to a Mustang fan message board and attacking Ford.

No, it's more like going to an automotive message board and complaining about Ford. Last I checked this was a website about all editions of D&D and rpgs in general and this forum about 4e, not a forum for pro 4e only comments - at least in theory.
