Why only even number of skill points per level?

Why do all core classes (and prestige classes as far as I know) get an even number of skills per level? Is there a game balancing reason for this?

Factoring in intelligence bonuses can of course grant an odd number but why are there no classes with for example 3 skill points/level?

I understand why attribute bonuses need to be even but I am not sure about skills. I ask because I would like to tweak some classes. Adding two skill points/level seems too much but adding one seems just about right.

Thanks

You don't have to worry about it. There isn't any real reason for it, and you won't do any harm by giving 3 or 5 base skill points per level to a class. If adding one makes it seem just right, then do so :).

After all, every human class gets odd numbers :)

Think of the balance! Won't anyone think of the balance?

Are you MAD?!?

Your idea is just odd! If the classes aren't even you'll ruin the balance.

Don't say I haven't warned you.

It makes for easy accounting, especially when cross-class skills cost 2 skill points for 1 rank.

I agree, I was just thinking the same thing when I read the question.

When humans, non-humans with odd intelligence modifiers, humans with even intelligence modifiers, or anyone with an intelligence of 3 except a rogue, all have odd numbers of skill points?

And if non-multiclassers are maxing their skills, they never (after first level) buy a whole rank of a cross-class skill.

:) I can't really imagine an odd number of base points for a class giving anyone major accounting headaches :)

It's only easy for humans with odd Int bonus and non-humans with even int bonus.
